take the timing cover off and inspect the belt... and go from there if it looks sloppy and has marks like the teeth of the cam gears showing through its time to replace.

Find out if your car is an interference engine or not. If it isn't, I wouldn't sweat doing it yourself too much as long as you feel competent with tools and take your time. If you screw up it won't mess up anything. On the other hand... If you have an interference engine as stated you have to be super careful. Either way be sure to turn the engine by hand many times to make sure the timing marks are right before trying to start it up.

Looks like you already got some good advice about what it might be but I had seemingly the same problem on my Explorer (and still do) and someone said it could be a vaccuum leak. Could be either of these problems I guess.

dont forget that since you have about 150k on that belt, the waterpump should have about the same amount of miles on it, so i advise to go ahead and replace that as well
