using diodes to step up voltage

Recommended Posts

I run an MLA which does the same thing thats being done here. On cold mornings, in the 30s, my truck will be at 16.4 then around 15.7 when its warm and I have no issues yet. Been running that MLA for at least 2 years now.

OP I would like to see picks of your install

I have not made a final product yet, Just some tinkering between installs at my shop, I'm waiting for my H/O alt to get here to make sure I'm still where I need to be. I will get some pics than. For now its just some diode butt connected together and wrapped in a LOT of tape, as we don't have heat shrink and I couldn't find our solder anywhere.

lower tuning is just hard. I was surprised how loud 145 sounds at 35hz, and how quiet 145 sounds at 50hz.

Sweet, yeah the part number on the ones i was looking at where -6A10, but dont know what the "L" is on yours but i think they are the same,

6A10 6 Amp 1000V Rectifier Diode.

140.jpg They look identical with the exception of the "L". Im fairly sure they are the same .

They have some 10 amp ones for sale also, but im not sure i want to go much over the 15.2 warm on an otherwise stock electrical system except for big 3 upgrade with 2 Gauge and a new 130 amp alt.

I don't know much about Diodes so I have no Idea what the "L" means.

Missing Link Audio They made a little box that probably just contained some diodes, LOL. it was like 80.00 IIRC

MLA = Missing Link Audio

I have one on my 03 Mountaineer 4.6l V8 same as Ford Explorer and I run about 15.6-15.9 Cold and 14.9 Hot right now. Really depends on the temperature outside. Last Summer the lowest voltage I was at with the MLA installed was 14.6

Here it what a Ford MLA looks like

This is actually a dule alt set up. The yellow wires just get spliced into the alt wire and the other plug is a GM plug so you can add a second GM alt to a ford.

You think that this setup could work on a 98 dodge ram? It has a external regulator and was wondering what wire to tap into.

It should but you will have to find the wire, I have no idea.

Ok I bought two 5 amp diodes the biggest ones they carry at radioshack. How did you know what wire to splice in you car? Its not the 12 volt ignition wire right? I know with wire that is. There are only 2 wires in my truck that goes to the alternator so im assuming its the other wire. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Its one of the wires in the Alt Harness, I AM NOT SURE IF THIS MOD WORKS ON OTHER CARS, You first need to understand how the regulator of your alt works. see if you can find a diagram of your alt. On MY cat it was orange, On my old blazer I THINK it was red.

Since you have had experience with Ford, i ordered two 6 amp diodes but im not sure which wire to splice them into ? Do you have any suggestions on this Hotdog ????

You can purchase the diodes here at Parts-Express;

I did a lot more research and these are the ones just like 97SSBlazer used and what most people on the net are using to do this mod. Each one equals about .5 volts just like he said . Thanks for the 411- 97SSBlazer !!

TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK !!!!

thanks man, Since the XS VCM is out of stock I figured I'd play a little. If your not comfortable doing this mod I HIGHLY recommend the XS VCM, I used one all last year in my blazer and it works great.
