Drop it out of the car, remove the fuel, insert a strong shop vac hose into the vent opening and leave it running to suck the fumes out for a few minutes and leave it on and drill smaller holes around the original hole, fiberglass chopp matt and resin it...and i'd call it good as new....but thats just ME...I'm in no way responsible for YOUR actions

Edit: Also if its a metal gas tank a neo magnet on the outside of the tank would more than likely prevent metal shavings in the fuel pump

You DO NOT need to get a new tank. To get the tank ready drain out and filter all the gas (into a large bucket then poor it into gas cans like it should be) to remove metal shavings, then use a neo magnet in the tank to get the rest of any shavings out. Blow the tank out with an air compressor while OUTSIDE to get rid of all fumes. Fiberglass over the hole just like BassJunkie said, or if it's metal, weld the hole closed. Then mask off all hoses and connections, and then spray the entire tank in bedliner to make sure it'll be strong and sealed. Reinstall and pour your gas back in, filtering it again. Good as new, worked great when i had to do it.

ok so what if i have a good layer of jb weld already on the hole and it doesnt work.. can i just put this shit ontop of it? im not able to actually remove the entire tank to sand it down and working in some tight quarters

How big is the hole? Can you screw a self tapper in with epoxy on the threads

Wouldnt do that. electric motor pumping out gas fumes. sounds like a bomb to me.

They make gastank patch kits. they work for awhile

I've seen a gas tank for a semi welded with fuel still in it using this method, also mythbusters proved that wrong. JS

thats for a semi (desil fuel) it burns slower and combusts under pressure. regular gas however is highly flammable i would not put a torch MIGwelder or arc welder any where near that hole.

if you think about it the tank would act as a giant cylinder and your welder would be the spark plug. the more vapor inside your tank will increase the potential for it to explode and create a larger explosion.

also note that having more fuel in your tank will reduce the amount of vapor in the tank.

i would replace it immediately.
