Audio Boffins
I'd like to know what to look for when buying a sub second hand, obviously I dont wanna end up with an expensive paperweight. I know most can be reconed, but I wanna make sure that when I buy I'm not being ripped off. What checks can I make with a multi meter, visual checks etc.
Guest
with a multimeter, check the resistance of the coil(s). they should generally read +-1 ohm of the stated impedance. to get a more accurate reading, put both meter leads together and measure the resistance, then measure woofer resistance and subtract the 2 numbers, this helps avoid factoring in the internal resistance of the multimeter. there are other ways to check also, one way you can tell is to just smell near the coil area or the pole vent to see if you smell any burnt coil. also push down on the CENTER (NOT THE EDGE) of the cone to see if there is any rub. if there is you will feel and hear it also. check the spiders for damage as well, move the cone up and down with your fingers and inspect for broken glue joints or tears. Audio Boffins
Buy from a reputable seller! That real helpful buddy! Obviously, but some people take advantage of people who know less! Reputable or not they could still be a c#nt!
AI James
try to look at glue joints and spiders if possible as well.
Audio Boffins
Cool. So to clarify a dual 2 ohm sub should read how close to 2 ohms per coil to be good? If it read say 1 ohm or 3 ohms is that bad!
