I have to check what version I have on my head unit but i think its 2.1. it might just be slacker radio as well Im not sure. I use either a thumb drive or an ipod as a nas is impractical for a car in my opinion.

It's most likely slacker that's giving you a loss in sound quality. I've noticed the same thing because I also listen to slacker and I used to listen to pandora. The symptoms you were describing sound identical to mine, mainly I got almost no bass output. But I can stream my itunes library over BT and I have no problems with degradation in quality.
