Ground question for two batts

Recommended Posts

I just received my new batt in the mail, and I now have an issue with grounding. I don't have the wire to do a pos (+) and neg (-) run from the front batt to the back batt, and I have my money set up to the point where I have a certain amount left to spend on deadener and wood while still having money left over for things like gas/food/going out during the summer. So my question is:

Is it ok to run only a Pos run of 1/0 to the back batt, and have the back batt ground on the rear strut tower? I currently have a single batt set up and that battery is grounded to the front strut. I remember reading something about grounding rules/issues for different types of cars (like unibody cars and cars with an actual frame), and I want to ask here so I can learn more and not fuck anything up. Once I gather up the funds, I will definitely purchase more wire and do a neg run to the back, but is this OK for now? I want to learn as I go. Hopefully someone can chime in on this!

Thanks for all the help.

If your car is full frame then then ground to the strut tower in the rear or to just the chassis is fine. Ideally the dedicated run of neg would be best, but grounding just in the rear is fine, things will work as they should.

Ok, thanks. I thought would work, but I wanted to make sure.

you connect the + of each battery together (use a fuse right after the front batter and right before the back battery) and connect the - of each battery together.

Its ALMOST the same as wiring up a speaker in series... just positive run to the rear battery before the amp, then fuse (if you want) then have seperate ground wire from battery and amp. DO NOT ground your amp to the neg - terminal on the battery

Why not ground it there? And I think you meant wiring up a speaker in parallel, which it is exactly the same as.

Why not? My understanding is the battery is the best ground you can get since everything grounds at the battery anyway.

@Pburke

You fuse for the wire. So if its OFC 1/0 use 300a, 4gauge use 120a, etc.

You may be offended by the above. Don't take it personally, I'm just abrasive.
