irpirates 4runner rebuild - 4 15's 6th order. i haz TL numbaahhss

I actually thought that for a while, didn't really get much attention on any forum. don't really mind either way. i'll just keep updating regardless of comments lol. kind of like having the build log for myself.

subs are getting reconed to 15s. too much cone control/rear chamber too small, even though it was working great sound and spl wise. subs just weren't moving enough to cool properly. shouldn't be an issue with 15's though honestly i'm pretty sure i'll gain based off tom's jeep when he went from 15s to 18s. opens up quite a few options for subs as well. mainly NSv3s when they come out haha (limited mounting depth)

still piles of crap to do on this damn thing. plugging cutouts will be shitty lol. need to make it so it sits flush with existing outside layer. subs will be flush mounted this time around as well. pretty excited to get everything up and playing again with all the changes.

Why would you gain going from 18's to 15's? That's odd. I for one am following your build very closely. I very much appreciate the fact you take the time to update this thread with numbers/problems/success because most people let their build threads die once they are finished. Your build is really inspiring to a lot of us.

If you had a larger vehicle, what would be a more ideal volume on the rear chamber versus what it is now?? Would you stay with the same volume on the front chamber? Did you shrink the port area down? What was the peak frequency?

Goldtaz1 - thanks a lot man. I'm really glad to hear people have learned from my many mistakes lol. honestly it's hard for me to say what would be ideal since this is still my first 6th order. haven't had a chance to play with the 15s in there yet but for the nightshades (small box requirements) somewhere around 4.5-5 per for the 18s. probably would have wanted to go bigger on the front chamber. somewhere around 1.5 front to 1 rear. in hindsight, the box was just way too damn small for 18s even though it did good numbers. guess it's just like you see people preaching all other variables being constant, a 15 in a proper sized box vs an 18 crammed in 15 will be louder. pretty sure it should apply to my 6th as well.

one thing i did notice when i was doing the 22 hz notes (full tilt no subsonic lol) that it was dropping off. i mean it would play the lows pretty well but i just don't think there was enough airspace to really hit them fully. kinda sounded hollow, hard to explain lol. on low volumes i could hear the rear ports huffin when it got down really low. guessing the cone control really helped me out there in being able to crank the low lows.

it was pretty musical with the 18s minus the 1 big peak in the mid 40s so i'm pretty happy with the ratio. i would think enlarging the front chamber would make it even peakier, something i don't want. don't have enough personal experience to say anything for sure though lol. peak frequency sealed up was 44, driver door open 47, mic on the glass. i never got around to being able to really listen to it with the rounds. didn't shrink the port yet, wanted to try a couple things with it but subs crapped out too quickly lol.

Thanks mailboom. i have been checking yours out quite a bit, just haven't commented yet. you're being all about what's going into it haha. it was pretty damn impressive the first time around. just makes me realize more and more how much my 4th failed for how much shit i crammed in it haha.

i would be running into thermal on the subs too quickly. aren't moving nearly enough to cool properly. only reason i didn't when the 18s were still in was because other shit fell apart before i could thermal them. and i was really careful playing them full tilt, was for 30 seconds to a minute at a time (electrical not up to par)

lol, newp. still 4. 6 15s i'd probably end up running into thermal issues as well. don't know if i'd even be able to fit them, not enough of surface area on the baffle lol. plus not enough power. don't have much space in the back for batts and amps. pretty sure 4 15s will be just as loud if not louder than the 18s will probably end up switching to nsv3s in the future but that's a ways off lol.
