Fish Chris Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 So, I got my new Dayton HO 15"s, and from all the reviews, and the outward appearance and construction, they really seem like great subs.... except for one pretty stupid thing (which I'm thinking at least a few other subs must suffer from, as well) > The mounting screws are ridiculously close the the edge of the cutout circle ! I mean like, if I use a thin drywall screw, I might have 1/8" of an inch of bite ! And heaven forbid somebodies cutout be 1/8" an inch too big ! Mine were spot on, but still.... So, I've been brainstorming for a better mounting idea, and I'm thinking...... You ever see those little brackets that hold a speaker grille on ? Okay, so they are usually plastic, but how about some kind of a little aluminum, or steel grabber, built along the same principal ? So that your screws could be way outside of your cutout circle. Then, you could use large screws, bolts, with the back clips (I forget what they call those) or anything else you wanted. Does this make sense ? I know of a hardware store about 10 miles from me that carries all kinds of oddball stuff, and if anybody has something like this, it will be this place. Plus, they have a bunch of old guys that have worked there for like 20 years or more ! So, you tell them your situation, and they can usually hook you up ! Any other ideas for this issue ? Yes, of course guys, I plan to drill my pilot holes at just a slight angle, but even so, this will still only give me a tiny bit more bite, so little so that I'm still restricted to using tiny dry wall screws. Forget about anything larger, as this will put the edge of the pilot hole even closer to the cutout ! I'm not sure if you guys have ever seen any speaker mounting holes that were quite this close, otherwise, I think you might feel differently.... If I find anything cool to fix this, I'll post about it. Going to that super hardware store in a little bit. Peace, Fish
