bdog
6 month old fi bl 12 just stopped working so i pulled it out and tested the coils and one coil reads nothing and there is a small cracks above the tinsel leads . how does this happen? i set the ssf so the subs would not bottom out and only fed it a AQ1200 . could it be i only gave it one week break in time? box is 2.1cf tuned to 32hz with 32.6" or port area . im just so confused coils look nice and bright/shiny .Any ideas of what i did wrong? Maticus
Cracks above the tinsel leads, caused from when the tinsels heated up too much from the amp sending clipped power and the burn made a weak spot causing it to rip with excessive movement? bdog
if it was getting that hot wouldn't my coils look dark not brand new like they do ? Quote REP
Maticus
With clipping those leads probably would have went before the coil, considering they are the old style flying round leads, correct? 01VWGREENMACHINE
im still a little new but sounds like the sub was under powered which causes clipping?? Maticus
im still a little new but sounds like the sub was under powered which causes clipping?? No, Clipping is caused by too much gain, or songs that just naturally clip. Clipping is when a round wave ends up getting squared off at the crest and the trough of a wave. You can never damage a woofer by under-powering it with a clean signal.

deathcards
im still a little new but sounds like the sub was under powered which causes clipping?? my sub has about 300 going to it out of 750 i think its because of the speaker terminals on the box but anyways back to the point my sub has been going for about 2 years and still going strong Quote skar sk2500.1 0 gauge power and ground kunukonceptz alpine HUvxi65 components on BA gt-275new build log -> http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/150642-project-d-kon-deathcards-build-log/#entry2148821 2 x-15 sundowns singer alt, odyssey bat, and maxwell ultra caps

bkolfo4
If underpowering damaged subs, you would have to listen to them at full volume all the time or they would get damaged. Had a kid call me and let me know that crutchfield said that logic is not true. "A 600 watt amp outputs 600 watts all the time. It is just the voltage that changes."
