I heard my first "SQ" system in about 1986 - long before folks even used that term. The system had Morel speakers - at the time, considered pretty exotic. And it definitely sounded good to my ears. Morel fell out of favor with the SQ crowd as MB Quart and Dynaudio became the "in" brands. Then, they fell out of favor as Focal became the go to brand. Now Hertz / Audison is definitely the go to brand in that arena.

In my travels, I've heard countless cost no object systems built around the best gear that money could buy. Focal Berylliums . . . Dynaudio 3-way components . . . So, which one was best? Simple - the system that Terry SooHoo and gang at Paradyme in Sacramento, CA assembled to compete in a nationwide contest Sony put on. It had about $750 worth of gear in the vehicle at retail (including speakers and amps) . . . and the front component speakers were $169 / pair tops. Now don't get me wrong . . . all I kept thinking was . . . imagine if Terry started with some GOOD stuff!

Know how - 95% . . . Brand - 5% . . .

i have 2 $10 8 inch midbass in my doors and 4 $10 6.5 midbass in my back doors all from parts express the sound quality is amazing and volume is so high its amazing i am running a older planet audio made in America 4 channel 175.4 bridged to 2 channel at 1ohm total guessing 300 watts each side its impressive the only thing i spent money on was on the tweeters i got 6 kicker tweeters my buddies and most people spend $300 cant even touch me on volume and sound quality cant believe how loud it plays and very clean no breakup or distortion at high levels i spent under $300 on speakers if i would have never said anything people would think i spent over $1000 on my mids and highs the point i am saying i agree its the install and speaker placement

I say alot is install dependent. I've heard top dollar comp sets sound blah. And some cheaper ones sound pretty damn good! I ran punch comps back in 06-07, and everyone loved the way they sounded. No one believed it was the cheap(125) comp set, on a memphis 4ch

At the other end of the spectrum, I should mention that I use MB Quart QSD-216s in my personal vehicle - not an inexpensive pair of speakers. I got them while employed at Rockford, who at the time owned MB Quart. Most who have listened to my vehicle are blown away by their performance. My recipe:

- Midbass drivers mounted to 1" thick Baltic Birch baffle

- Midbass driver sealed to baffle with 1/8" weatherstripping tape

- Baffle secured to door with 1/4-20 hardware and sealed to door with silicone

- Sound deadener on exterior door skin - between 1/2" and 3/4" thick

- Sound deadener on interior door skin - between 1/4" and 3/8' thick

This allows me to cross the speakers over at about 75 Hz (24 dB / oct) with over 400 watts RMS per channel on them. This provides excellent midbass response (like - you can nearly feel it in your chest) and excellent integration with the woofers. The icing on the cake was allowing Rockford's OEM department to tune the car for me. Coupled with a pair of 18" HX2 woofers that play flat to 20 Hz with ease, it's the best "SQ" system I've ever owned.

Before the MBQs, I used Lightning Audio Storm 6.5" Components. In comparison to the MB Quarts, I would say they lacked the nth bit of detail, and had a slight bump in the midbass/midrange area that I couldn't tune completely out. From a practical standpoint, the midbass speakers simply would not handle the same kind of power. But, SQ was still good nonetheless.

You certainly get what you pay for in regards - and the QSDs deliver the SQ I'm looking for and handle the abuse of triple their rated power on stuff like Benny Benassi without failure . . .

I heard a set of hertz comps in a "sq" car and they sounded like absolute shit. He even said he went through the imaging placement and all that jazz sq guys do and it was terrible. I knew it wasnt the equipment though. It was a just a failed attempt.

thanks for the input man, I'm really looking into doing an SQL install in my car, another question I have is what's so great about running a component set of speakers active or just through the regular crossover supplied with the component set? I was looking into doing 1 mid-bass, 1 component woofer or midrange, and 1 silk-dome tweeter in each of my doors, center channel in the middle, and a good set of coaxials just to fill in the rear area of the car but am wondering how I should run all these speakers, multiple amps with all speakers running active or should I just use 2-3 amps depending on how powerful the amps are? of course i want to deaden the doors a lot also.

If you're talking some bad-ass component speakers, I always recommend using the included passive crossover networks - mainly because of all the money put into their design. The chance of you (or I) being able to pull off what they've spent months designing with a twist of the crossover control on your amplifier is like zero. Sound deadening is key - not only will it improve the sound of your speakers and eliminate rattles, it will improve the overall efficiency of the midbass drivers.

I built many a system over the years with RF component speakers. Looks like the T3 and T5 are some serious contenders.

Lol the point of SQ is to be flat. Have no peaks or dips in ANY of your spectrum.
