New member with Type R question

Hey guys how's it hangin. I've lurked this forums for a while and decided today to join. I'm 20 years old, and I work full time as a Graphic/Web Designer at a technical solutions firm in Maryland. Ever since i got my car when i turned 16 i've wanted a bad-ass sound system. My parents were nice enough to get me a brand new '08 Honda Civic LX. Before you hate on the civic, remember it was basically free. I'm not complaining .

This is what I have in my system so far. I just got my subs/bass amp in last night. This is in chronological order.

Pioneer AVH-P4200dvd

Polk 6.5 MM6501 front and rear(now out)

Focal Access 165 A1 Front

Focal Access 165 A1 Rear

Focal Solid 4 (400x4)

Rockford Fosgate T1500bd

Alpine SWR-1223D X2

Sealed Pre-fab box.

Now that you know what i have so far, who I am and what i do I have a question. Why is it that Type R's sound so sloppy in a sealed box? I got the subs with the box, it was a steal for the price! I plan on building a ported box at some point, but for now i'm happy .

IMO Alpine's are power hungry subs who need to breathe and are very claustrophobic so port that bad boy and watch it give you happy bass. Plus from looking at your list its a pre-fab box usually those are built to very generic specs and that Alpine has its own specific parameters that will make it happy. Welcome to the Forum I'm a Civic guy as well check my build log in my sig it will be finished in about a week. GLWB and badass set up thus far Focal is definitely a top of the line brand.

P.S. Don't bash the Civic...Civic's FTW :woot:

sloppy or boomy in a sealed box would indicate too much internal volume inside the enclosure you can glue in some hard styrofoam blocks to eat up some of that space but i would just build a ported box because of the output you will gain

I had a type r in a sealed box and I absolutely hated it!!! Build them a nice ported box and it will be a whole new system my man! You got a nice set up there!

Its taken me about 2 years to get this far, mostly because I could only work part time while I was in school. I didn't really have the funds to go all out at one time. I have some spare mdf laying around, I had to build some spacers for my rear speakers. As far as boxes go I am a complete noob, so I'm gonna spend some time reading on the forums, and try and lay one out in 3ds max or autocad.

Oh yeah I had another question, Should my subs be facing the front or rear of the vehicle? I have them facing the rear right now, I wasn't too sure which way to go.

After driving home from work and listening to them in 45minutes of traffic I know my next investment is a shit ton of sound deadener, I have a few samples of second skin that SMD sent me, not enough to make any difference though.

always face to the rear in a trunk car unless you're planning on sealing the edges of the box off if you point it forward.

Thanks for the reply! I'm looking at the specs for a ported enclosure on my packet. It says 13.5x13.5x24in. Does this mean for 2 speakers I would need a box 13.5x13.5x48? I'm not really sure what specs change when you add another speaker...
