What's worse, too much, or too little port area?

Let me start off by saying my original box design did not have an aero port, but there were complications and i ended up using a 3" diameter port my friend had. Needless to say i made a huge mistake. Using torres' Box designer, i found that my current setup is only giving me 7.07sqin of port area. The sub i am running is an AQ SDC-2.5 15", which needs 16sqin of area. My problem is between the 4" and 6" aero port. The 4" provides me with 12.56sqin, and the 6" provides 28.26. What do I do? Please help!!!

Power use comes into play with port area too. What power is that sub seeing in its current environment?

Would be easier for people to give you a accurate answer with ALL of the info needed..

I will say though, 9.5-10 sq per cube is about the smallest i every try to use with a normal type sub in a small enclosure running 1.5 to 2x rms power.

You have a 15" sub, so hopefully your using more than one cubic foot of air space. I dont have torres' calc on this computer so i can't check it out.

But when your using aero ports you don't need the typical 12-16 sqin per cube. You can use 9-13 sqin per cube.

You must remember that the "16sqin" is PER cubic foot of air space after displacements and not including the port itself.

But to answer your title, too much can cause unloading and lower the power handling of the sub, and potentially cause premature failure.

Too little and it will cause port noise, and will not sound good.

i resolve to be a nicer moderator.

As kandi already said, Power comes into play in both the port, AND the size of the enclosure itself... More is less... and less is more... LOL...

Well, im running the AQ750 @2oms so that's 500rms. My box is 3cubes on the nose after all displacements.

I guess my final snag is to either get the 6" or the 4" aeroport. I'll find some pics of the box in car to show why it is the size it is.

when youre figuring in how much port area you need its PER cube of the box...so if you have a 3 cube box (this is just an example to help ya) to get the 12-16 you could multiply 12x3 to get you 36 inches of port area needed..for 16 it would would 16x3 to give you 48 and so on...hope that helps :pardon:
