Best battery for under $150

The battery I have under the hood currently is, for lack of a better word, useless. It constantly dies. Every time I my car to the local "cheap ass battery shop" ($17 refurbed batteries, really?) they tell me my alt is bad. This is the third alt I've put in there in 2 months. Am I wrong for thinking the problem is related to the fact that the last "cheap ass battery" this place put in (the one thats in there right now) blew a cap and spewed acid everywhere and my dad decided it would be perfectly fine to just refill it with bottled water and put a cap from another battery on it? [That sentence seems a bit run-on-ish but I cant find any other way to type it.] No one will take anything I say with any weight since I dont have a "formal" education in anything car related. Just the "informal" education absorbed from countless hours on here and hands-on with my own car.

Car is a 97 Ford Escort 2.0 SOHC

Currently no system other than stock. I took everything extra out when everything started going to shit.

Well it seems the budget committee had a different opinion than the $150 I set. She wants $50 or less, like that'll happen. But hey, like I said, nothing I say matters to any of these people. She doesnt even like the $103 price tag on the Autozone Duralast Gold. Or even the regular Duralast ($93).
