BillKessel
Hi, i have 2 12" JL w6v2's just bought from a JL authorized dealer, and a custom box they built with the subs facing down and port out the front. When the subs play anything below 30hz they make a very werid rattling noise, it is bearable but noticeable enough to have me worried(Almost sounds like a knocking). I can not tell if its the structure of the box or the actual subs making this noise, Any and all opinions are welcome !! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1q4efcqezU&feature=youtu.be ---Happens at --- 3-5 seconds 13-15 seconds 22-24 seconds closest to side of sub woofer --------------------------------------------- JL Audio actually faxed the dealer the box design claiming it would work best in a softtop vehicle HD 1200.1 amp Head Unit Settings From Dealer Bass = -6 Sub = +10 Treb = 0 Fade = +R2 Edited January 13, 2012 by BillKessel

Real96SS
Could be the wood cracked or maybe the wires from the subs slapping the box on the inside. He claims its my truck rattling and i can bring it in next week again for another check. Ive spent over 4,000 dollars at this store, ranging from car alarams , remote start + Smart Phone start , 2 amps, and many subwoofers. this is the last time i let someone else install my stuff! BillKessel
Could be the wood cracked or maybe the wires from the subs slapping the box on the inside. The sub wire can make that loud throaty sound? The box is brand new (about 13 days)
Autruche
Sounds like you are simply bottoming the sub out. Basically over excursion, causing the coil to hit the bottom of the motor. Usually a result of playing below tuning with no subsonic filter set. What is the box tuned to? Quote Need Test Tones/Sine Waves? Yikes, i will have to call the guy and ask what the box is tuned to. Didnt know you could bottem out at 30 HZ but play 40hz and 20hz just fine? the subs do make a clapping noise almost when bass plays if you lay your head near the box, ( no matter what song )
Real96SS
Maybe its just my computer speakers but that didn't sound throaty at all it sounded like craacking would or something slapping the inside of the box. With the bass playing it's possible for the wires to slap the box hard enough and fast enough to sound like that. Worth checking out.I would pull the subs out and check the inside of the box for cracks and see if the wires are slapping the box. Autruche
It could possibly be a loose dustcap too. I believe those JL subs use a full cone dustcap on them, so it should be easy to tell if that's loose. Sounded just like that when my friend's dustcap came unglued. If so, take care of it right away. We didn't get it taken care of immediately with his sub and the dust cap flew right off taking a good chunk of the cone with it. Pull the sub out and free air it, but be careful with the volume. See if it still makes that noise. Should rule out whether it's the box or not then. Quote Need Test Tones/Sine Waves? Reminds me a lot of tinsel slap that you used to hear a lot in the days before they tinsels were sown into the spider. Taking it out and play some tones to help isolate it rather then music, but like Autruche said, be careful as it is fairly easy to over drive a speaker like that.
