h22lude Posted February 19, 2012 Report Posted February 19, 2012 Yes i searched.. for the past 2 weeks.. on this site and others.. So my rpm's are dropping maybe 100 to 200 when i turn my volume all the way up... I have a Kicker 350.4.. a Kicker 650.4... and a Diamond 1500.1 (wired at 4 ohms so maybe 370 watts).. I already have 0 gauge going from alt to battery.. and engine to bat to chassis.... Is this rpm drop bad for my alternator?? I only notice it at idle... My question is.. would insufficient wiring cause the RPM's to drop?? I have 4 gauge going to all 3 of those amps.. I'm wondering if adding another 4 gauge would help reduce the RPM drop.. Or would getting an AGM battery like an XS help the RPM's not drop??? I know getting an alternator would probably be the proper fix.. but an alternator is obviously pretty pricey.. I don't abuse my system.. I oscoped all my amp outputs.. and i play within reason.. I never even usually play a full song at full tilt.. maybe half a song.... at MOST i will maybe play 2 songs full tilt in a row but that is RARE. I like to let my equipment have time to rest etc... So I am looking for the most budget friendly solution to fixing my RPM's from dropping.. Also as a side note.. Does running my components ACTIVE improve efficiency a lot?? I heard the passive crossovers are pretty inefficient and suck power... so potentially if I run active I would be pulling less power and maybe that would reduce RPM drop?? Is running ACTIVE that much more efficient?? Thank you for your time.
kandiman71874 Posted February 19, 2012 Report Posted February 19, 2012 The drop in rpm is due to the increased load your alt is putting on the engine under higher output condition. This is going to happen no matter what you do if the alt is requested to put out more power per the load put on it. Real96SS Posted February 19, 2012 Report Posted February 19, 2012 I don't know if adding that stuff will help but I can tell you that I have 2 270amp DC alts and 4 kinetik 2400's and if I'm at idle and go full tilt my rpms drop almost 300.Like Kandiman said its just the load your alternators are putting on the motor when you have your system that loud.As long as your not pulling more amps than your alternator can supply you should be good. Mtnbikecrazy55 Posted February 19, 2012 Report Posted February 19, 2012 Ya. It's just like how your rpm's will drop when your blower motor turns on in the summer. It's no biggie. h22lude Posted February 20, 2012 Author Report Posted February 20, 2012 Cool thanks for the replies guys really helps with peace of mind.. I like having my music sound good but its not worth getting stuck on the side of the road. lol Does anyone know how much more efficient running components active is??? I have heard the passive crossovers are pretty inefficient is this true?? I am on the border of going active just so i can fine tune my highs better.. but if it helps with efficiency at all that'll justify me dropping the cash.. I already have enough amp channels i just need a good crossover.. appreciate the input.
