Necessary tools for box making

Recommended Posts

I have about a dozen or so of these http://www.harborfreight.com/24-inch-bar-clamp-96213.html and a couple of the 36" ones. I used them on every box I've built and they still work like the day I bought them. If I need bigger than 36" I just hook together two 24s or a 24 and a 36.

Yea, um when you use a table saw don't turn your head.... I did. My thumb went through the saw, went to the hospital, 2 weeks with it in a wrap then back to the hospital because the tendons were not repairing themselves on their own so I had to have surgery followed by 4 more weeks in a wrap. Part of my thumb still doesn't have feeling and it has a lump from scar tissue.

Moral of the story: Don't be stupid like me with power tools. Or use a table saw that isn't 25 years old and has no safety features. After the accident we bought a new one with all the bells and whistles.

If your looking for a plunge router I picked up one of these a couple weeks ago http://www.harborfreight.com/power-tools/routers/1-1-2-half-hp-variable-speed-plunge-router-67119.html and I LOVE it so far. It looks to be of equal or better quality than the Ryobi I was looking at in home depot and I got it on sale for $69.99 so it was about $50 cheaper.

Yikes! Thanks for sharing though. People need to hear stories like this to remember that these power tools aren't toys. I'm lucky to have had no serious injuries. Only bad incident was trying to loosen a keyed chuck on handheld drill. Chuck was super tight, and my hand slipped off the key. Raked my finger along edge of a spade bit in the drill, ripped my finger open. Blood everywhere, friend said my face went pretty pale, but somehow didn't need stiches. Goes to show that you can injure yourself even without the power running!
