HondaChad
So.. I smoked my first voice coil today I was cruisin down the road headed home from my buddys house and just playing a cd at like 2/3 volume, subwoofer (MTX Thunder 8000 thats 11 years or more old), all of a sudden the bass stops hitting, I turned my head unit off and drove home 200 more yards, get out open my trunk and get hit in the face by almost a cloud of smoke.. I back away for a second and see smoke just pouring out of the port.. Took the sub out and now im figuring out how and what new sub I'm going to buy Hit me up with ideas on a new '10, as I'm a rookie and know next to nothing about different subs Budget : $400ish Quote 1 '12 Massive Audio TORO 124 powered by a Rockford Fosgate Power 500a2 (pushes around 705 watts @ 2ohms) Orion Xtreme 500.4 powering Orion HCCA Competition 6s component set w/ tweeters and MB Quart component set w/ tweeters Kenwood KDC-348U Head Unit
TheNewbie
Do you know why the sub blew? Clipping, gains to high ect? Don't want you to get another woofer just to smoke this one too.. I'd rectify the problem first if it wasn't just pushing it to hard. Quote Check out my build log: http://www.stevemead...60#entry1958353 Different folks have different strokes. HunterJohnson
11+ years old that things a beast. even though it doesnt just smooke and die. speakers blow from too much power ie clipping/distortion. set ur gains right and do what stevog says sa-10 FTW! I'd rectify the problem first if it wasn't just pushing it to hard. I have a Rockford power 500a2 cut down to about 400~ watts, had my radio on +1 for the sub on a -15 to +15 scale It wasn't distortion the slightest bit, it was a perfectly good CD, wasn't skipping, even turned up all the way I've played the same song I was playing when it smoked about 5 times before The subwoofer was at LEAST 11 years old, so it was bound to go anytime.. But yea can't go wrong with sundown, DC, Fi/AA, Skar...400 should get you a pretty decent sub. I'd rectify the problem first if it wasn't just pushing it to hard. I would assume it blew because it had been used for 11+ years. HondaChad
When my dad gets home I'll take pics of it and I'm assuming I had too much power, even now MTX Thunder 8000 '10's say 400rms/800 peak It probably had just over 400 watts going into it, it being ran hard for 4 years, then sitting in a garage for 7 years probably didn't have any advantages to it either I don't reckon.. lol Quote 1 '12 Massive Audio TORO 124 powered by a Rockford Fosgate Power 500a2 (pushes around 705 watts @ 2ohms) Orion Xtreme 500.4 powering Orion HCCA Competition 6s component set w/ tweeters and MB Quart component set w/ tweeters Kenwood KDC-348U Head Unit

Nah It sat in a garage for the last 7 years, but had been used for 4 years before that, lol Quote 1 '12 Massive Audio TORO 124 powered by a Rockford Fosgate Power 500a2 (pushes around 705 watts @ 2ohms) Orion Xtreme 500.4 powering Orion HCCA Competition 6s component set w/ tweeters and MB Quart component set w/ tweeters Kenwood KDC-348U Head Unit
