Hell, when i did mine i blew into a straw and stuff flew out of the gap (on my XLs) and a bit of masking tap around the pole and it was spotless. but N8 is right, tigher the gap, harder it will be. Luckily all my recone jobs have had huge gaps. Cashdollar2009 Posted May 2, 2012 Report Posted May 2, 2012 Yeah the tape is used first essentially as a way to block any small metal shards from getting down into the gap. And your motor is fine, you just need to make sure it is all cleaned out and SPOTLESS before you drop the new coil in there. In more sol oriented drivers you will notice a tighter gap, bigger gaps basically allow for more play which is what you want for music. I'm not familiar with any DD drivers. And I'm on mobile so I can't look at the pictures of the gap as I type this. But just do your best and get that gap spotless before you drop in the recone. Or you will need to cut open your new recone to clean it out completely and buy ANOTHER recone. It's not the end of the world, common mistake if you haven't done a lot of research or asked questions first. P.S. for grinding I've always just used a drill and a couple different sized wire brish attachments. I know other people have other preferences, but I used the drill on my first recone and it seemed to work fine, so I just stuck with it.
