My Probe Build! Time for something new. Like paint, for example.

Love the looks of these but they are a bitch to get loud

What exactly are you referring too? The acoustics or the electrical system? I've had a dozen different setups in my old one in high school and she pounded pretty good off of small stuff. Sounded like ass, but I plan on bolting everything down.

Why would you spend all that money when you could probably buy a decent shape probe of that year for pretty cheap, replacing airbags alone will cost an arm and a leg. If you can do it cheap great, but it looks like a fortune in parts just to get back to square one.

I totally agree man! Sorry for not being clear, I'm just salvaging parts off this one for my new car, which I'm picking up sometime this week. Also getting another one after that to host some of these parts and possibly sell. It's all about money.

Oh yeah i was thinking wow thats going to cost a fortune to fix lol, glad to see you had another one.

Audio! This is just what I have so far:

My babies... Image Dynamics IDSPL 15". Dual 2 Ohm 2,5" Voice Coils 1200rms apeice. Don't look like much but... They eat L7s for breakfast. Six of this particular model ever made. I'm gonna go get two more off of the same guy soon. They're blown, I may recone them. I may use them as paperweights.

1024.jpg?md=1337570241000

My other baby. US AMPS USA100HC. Rated at... 100 watts rms at 4 ohms. Does about 2.5k or above at 1/2 ohm they say. I'm not that optimistic but I believe 2k. 225 amp current draw. Still have original box and manual. Excellent condition.

1024.jpg?md=1337570192000

Lots of 0 gauge!

1024.jpg?md=1337570272000

More to come obviously. Probably gonna use image dynamics components, mids, tweets, and more US Amps for power. I want to get ahold of a second USA 100hc and a two 50HC for mids and highs. Not sure about the head unit. Something nice i suppose.

Thanks man! Go get one! You'll never regret it. These cars are a blast, minus the constant upkeep.

Haha yeah I don't even know if that was fixable. Sunroof wouldn't close because the frame was so bent.

Worked on it all day today, had it running around 3pm. Spent osme time working out the kinks. All that doesn't work now is the speedometer and the engine temperature gauge... Believe me it is a major imporvement. The fella who had it before me was pretty good at physical mechanics..... not so much at electrical.

Here's an example. It's a hackjob. Random stuff cut, there's a stray live wire. Poor fastening of live wires... the list goes on. I can't wait until I can one day afford a new car.

1024.jpg?md=1337659568000

Anyhow, here's what I fixed today. This is what the tensioner looked like. It's jammed shut, allowing the pulley above it to move freely, causing the bracket attached to it to slap against the seized tensioner. This made it sound like an engine knock.

1024.jpg?md=1337659513000

This is how it now looks. Much improved. Problem solved. Extra engine = Money in the bank. Me = Very happy.

1024.jpg?md=1337659497000

Of course I couldn't be patient, so I took it for a spin! A few kinks to work out and then we'll talk audio.

1024.jpg?md=1337659553000

And end day 4 of work. Time for an Arnold Palmer with ice.

So here we go again, a little more done. However, this time there is nothing more mechanical that needs to be fixed! Today I swapped the doors, fixed the blinkers, rewired the speedo, and tuned the car as was necessary. All she needs is plates.

Here's some crappy pictures of what it looks like now.

1024.jpg?md=1337825657000

Keep in mind this is very temporary, as I will be getting paint rather soon. Any opinions on the color? I like black.

I'm holding off redoing the interior until I decide what is going to happen with the doors and the sub stage. I anticipate much fiberglassing. It is either gonna be 2 15"s or 4 15"s depending on what getting recones for my other two idspls looks like. Also if I can find another 100HC or not.

1024.jpg?md=1337825672000

Here's my door panels. I was thinking I am going ot replace the speaker grill there with a mid and a tweet, and then put another 4 speakers of some sort where that stupid pocket is, for a total of maybe 6 speakers per door... Also not sure what I'm going to go with as far as brands. I was thinking Image Dynamics or Oxygen Audio.

1024.jpg?md=1337825676000

Anyhow, at this point I need opinions! Brands, speaker layouts? Hit me with 'em!

  • 2 weeks later...

Sooo it's been awhile since I've done anathing worth puting up, and I feel I'm due. Updates are as follow:

Aquired 50+ feet of Kicker 1/0 Gauge in a trade for a sub box.... Win.

1024.jpg?md=1338521150000

Was shopping for sound deadener, and then my dad sees me.... He works as an engineer at a crane company. He showed me this sound deadener that they use. It is VERY lightweight, and according to him one layer and you can't hear the sound of two 600 horse cummins immediately behind the cab. Needless to say I'm interested. He's gonna check on cost and manufacturer tomorrow.

1024.jpg?md=1338521068000

Stick on backing!

1024.jpg?md=1338521061000

It looks cool too.

1024.jpg?md=1338521075000

So at this point my funds are starting to dwindle, so I'm redoubling my job search. I had a promising visit to an audio place today, so I have a feeling that some Memphis gear is going to find its way into my car.

Anyhow, I was dissapointed noone had an advice, ideas, or opinions on my last post, so please feel free to comment!
