18" Subs

Recommended Posts

So I've decided that I want 18" subs.

Can't afford them now but I'm def considering them.

My friend argues that they are too sloppy and can't play good bass notes.

From the videos I've seen this doesn't seem to be the case, especially if I go for a Transmission Line box.

He has 4 15's and they pound but he has them in pre-made boxes.

He's not seeing the point of custom made boxes so I say fuck him.

Was he right in assuming they are sloppy?

I like really low bass.

50hz just seems too high.

40 and lower is where it's at for me.

With a set of 18's could I do 145db at 20hz?

Vehicle would either be a Wagon or an SUV.

Maybe an Eagle Talon. Couldn't imagine that but hey, why not?

So what I'm looking for is if there are any drawback's to 18's?

They need massive amounts of power?

Or is that a myth?

Re, Fi or TC Sounds?

I'm probably going Fi BTL because of the cost factor.

Another quick question.

If high-class audio companies subs are so loud why do they have a low db rating?

The starter 12" I just bought is rated for 96db, when the Fi 18" is rated for only 86?

Any kind of advice, warnings, thumbs-up, anything is welcome, even negative comments.

Thanks in advance.

I've heard that many times before, still decided to get my 18's, and they slam. Not sloppy in the slightest....

Fi is awesome...Drawback to 18's:they are huge and take a lot of space....I think that db rating matters for sq only(correct me if I'm wrong)

HOLY CRAP!!!

$116 for an 18" woofer.

Damn, that's actually worth the money to test.

Anyone had experience with them?

From what I'm reading the db rating has to do with efficiency.

So that would explain the difference.

So is 145db at 20hz possible?

I'm not too worried about high SPL I just want it to hurt and have this happen. A decent number is all.

"Dude, I heard your shit bumpin' the other day. Whatchu got in there?"

"Not much just 2 18's."

imo 18's arent sloppy at all. lol your friend says they are...coming from someone with premade boxes? *laff* :P. i had an 18" solo x and hit a 147, so i think with a pair you should definitely be able to hit 145. but very doubtful you'll get the airspace required for them in a car like a talon. maybe a wall and lots of work, but suv/wagon would be the way to go

i run a single FI btl 18 and love it, i used to be a 10 guy for the longest and thought that and 18 would just be sloppy. Well FI proved me wrong lol. My 18 is fast deep and low and i love it.

As far as drawbacks as it was stated they are big, for some that's a problem but for myself i have an astro van and plenty of room to play. SPL numbers are always hard to tell for any car because there is lots of different things that depend on that, but with the right 18 and power you could more then likely be able to get those numbers if you try test and tune, but again sometimes that's not always so easy.

Good luck keep us posted!
