Dc Lvl 4 18 Infinite Baffle 02 civic coupe?

hey guys, new guy to this site and new to infinite baffles so I have a question. I have a 02 honda civic coupe, I also have a level 4 dc 18. I had a thought to build a baffle right behind my rear seats out of two layers of 3/4" mdf, to mount the sub to. Then seal off my rear lid with foam and of course seal the baffle so the trunk acts as the enclosure. That all being said here are my questions, First my trunk has alot more air space in it then what you guys usually run to a level 4 18, Would this be a issue? Second how would I port this, meaning, can I? How would I figure out the total air space to tune the port? Any imput is appriciated guys, I know there are some smart guys on here and maybe ill get a little smarter by asking all these questions

You'd have to get rid of the rear seats and build the baffle off of the supporting lip of the rear deck. There's only 16" clearance between the rear deck and the seat supports, but you might be able to get away with it by cutting the brace off the bottom section behind the rear seats. Trust me, I've got the same car and the space restrictions are kind of a bitch to work with lol.

And I'm not too savvy on the whole infinite baffle deal.... Makes tuning a little tricky and you've got to seal everything off in the trunk. There's a lot of nooks and crannies back there. But since you asked about how to port it, get rid of your rear speakers and either fill the holes, or fill one and use the other for a port, or use both as a port.

Yeah man, space is my issue. I can remove that little "triangle" metal piece at the bottom of the seats and gain alittle. I can fit the dc in the opening now at a angle but obviously that will change once I build a baffle. I just know my truck will take a heck of a beating if I fire that thing to the rear or even worse facing the lid. This idea brings the waves in the cab. I have just never messed with baffles!

Personal experience... DO NOT POINT THAT MONSTER AT THE TRUNK LID!! Haha your trunk will hate you and it will knock the hinges out-of-level. And if you were to face it towards the rear, it would indeed destroy the trunk lock. Firing forward would be the best way to go in my opinion, getting a design for the baffle and using the airspace as best you can will be a little tricky. You're most likely gonna have to keep it at an angle, so the motor can sit down in the groove that leads down to the spare tire well.

Talk to 412CVX and he might be able to help you out with the airspace and porting. He's really good with box designs and all that cool stuff.

And also, since the trunk has way more airspace than needed for that sub, if you run it on lower power and set the gains correctly, it shouldn't be much of an issue.

I did! I was wanting to port through the rear deck lid so that it wouldnt sound so horrable if I ever put the rear seats up. I think the location is doable. Like I said, I just walked out there and put the sub in the hole behind the seats. It deff wont go through the hole but it does fit. I was getting ready to sell this thing and got this wild hair up my butt to baffle it. I may just hold on to it if I can get it to sound right. Im not going for spl, I want loud the ear. But its a 18" sub, So it kinda has to be impressive in order to attract a crowed. Its not a little sa8 that can blow peoples minds because of output with a small driver. Once you go 18, its gota be loud or you waisted your time!

A 3 12" ported box could probably fit, list some max dims and may give more output.

First thing you can do, is measure out where the baffle is going to mount to on the rear deck and the sides/rear supports of the seats, then cut a piece of MDF or birch to that size, then do your cutout for the sub and put it in place and do a test fit to make sure that you won't be losing the function of folding the seats back up. Then get some spray foam and start sealing off the trunk. Both sides where the strut mount top plates are, are huge gaps and it's a starting point. The underside of the rear deck, there's a lot of holes and whatnot up there, and you can either spray foam in the holes, or use gorilla tape or sound deadener and tape/deaden everything. That will be a starting point when it comes to tuning it for the output you want.

I would deff do my best to seal that trunk off to the front. If I do this I will also make a false floor out of 3/4 mdf to not only look better then the cardboard honda floor but also to give some density to the floor and seal in my spair tire well. hopfully someone on here has had some experience doing this combination. My biggest issue is going to be tuning a port for my trunk.

If you want to go the IB route these are the subs I would recommend.

IB setups are fun and you can save trunk space. You will need to seal the trunk completely from the cabin. Any gaps will result in loss of bass and bad group delay. Some people use the vents in the trunk in an IB while others seal them. Sometimes it helps output, sometimes it doesn't. I had a IB setup in my Malibu last year. 2 18" on 120 watts. It sounded awesome. Don't expect any bone crushing bass though. It will give you a better freq. response though. I know a cat using these subs all the way up to 200 hz in an sq setup.
