Should I run 4 or 8 ohm mids?

Recommended Posts

What's up everyone? I'm working on fiberglassing my doors and I want to run Sundowns: (1) 8", (2) 6.5", & (1) tweeter per door on a Sundown 100.4

I'm stuck between running these parallel:

all 8 ohm speakers at 2.66ohms

all 4 ohm speakers at 1.33ohms

8ohm 8" & 4ohm 6.5" 1.60ohms

I'm running active, so tweeter wouldn't matter. So if someone can tell me the benefits and downfalls of running the above options, that'll be great.

as far as im aware, the higher the ohm the better the sound quality you will get.. the problem being obviously is getting the power you need at 8 ohms from an amp.. if each speaker will have its own channel id personally run 4 ohm speakers just for ease of making power, unless your really into SQ haha

Not too too serious about SQ, just enough haha. But I'm trying to get my mids up to balance out the amount of bass I have, so I needed it louder but without forcing my amp to work too hard

Worthwhile read but some may not like the site or people.

that was pretty informative, thanks for the link!

Is it okay to run the (2) 4ohm 6.5" in series, which drops the load to 8ohms, and than parallel it with the 8ohm 8" to bring the load back to 4ohms?

If so, how loud and safe will this be?

You say you're running active with 3 different drivers, but only 4 channels. How does that work? Are you planning on putting the 6.5's and 8's on the same channel? If so, I would advise against it, and instead just run two 8's or three to four 6.5's... Or you can get another 2 channel for a total of 6 channels.

Running two 4 ohm speakers in series brings the ohm load into 8 ohms, then parrel them to a 8 ohm speaker would bring to a final load to 4 ohms. Might want to invest in a dmm if you do not already have one, and find the real world ohm load of the speaker, to get a more accurate reading.
