Recommended Posts

i am 17 years old and i do my own sub woofer enclosures i was wondering how can you get a clear smooth finish on the mdf? i use bondo to clear all the edges and seems. do you need a spray gun? wet sanding? i don't know much about painting so any advice will help :)

What would be good for covering the lines on the sides of the box?

bondo works exelent for that :) get a good coverage over the lines and sand down until it is smooth

Also put on a nice thick coat of primer and sand it, it will seal the wood so the paint doesnt seep in, plus its nice to get rid of any pinholes.

that is a good idea :) thanks have you ever worked with a spray gun? i have one but everytime i use it eighter the paint is too thick and it gives more of a texture look without the gloss or bearly any paint is coming out i try playing with the knob to control the amount of paint to go through but no luck

1. Build your box

2. add a layer of bondo

3. sand starting with 100 grit up to 220 grit

4. 3-4 coats of primer

5. sand with 400grit

4. 3-4 coats of color

5. sand with 800 grit

6. 4-5 coats of clear

7. sand with 800, 1000 ,1500, 2000 grit paper

6. polish with rubbing compound

7. polish with scratch remover

8. wait 3-4 weeks for paint to fully cure and hit it with a good car wax

You can use regular krylon spray paint with this method and get GREAT results It will honestly polish to a mirror finish, The key is to take your time and make sure each layer of paint is FULLY DRY before you move on to the next step.

Also when you paint you want to do really thin layers(not much more then what it takes to cover the surface) and make sure that you are painting with even strokes (watch Steve's video of his tahoe being repaint for a reference) making sure to do about 50% overlap on each pass
