Markus9821 Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 Hey all, having a little issue with my setup right now, here is the specs.. 2 Alpine MRP-M500 amps 2 Rockford Fosgate P3D412 500w RMS subs wired to 2ohms Alpine CDE-121 head unit Theres been times where I've bumped the subs for about an hour straight on long drives, and the amps never get ridiculously hot or go into protect mode. I've spent plenty of time setting my gain so theres no distortion or clipping. Two days ago I noticed the one subwoofer stopped working but the amp was still on. I checked all wires and everything seemed tight, is it possible that its getting low voltage and going into protect mode? Theres no light on the amp to show its in protect mode, so I'm kind of stumped. Each amp powers one subwoofer, and both are run off one battery. I have 4 gauge wire from the battery to a distribution block where I used 8 gauge wire to power each amp. Problem seems to solve itself when I restart my car. Any advice would be great, thank you.
Markus9821 Posted September 3, 2012 Author Report Posted September 3, 2012 So you don't own a multimeter. No I actually do, haven't had time to check due to an MX race, just wanted some opinions.
Guest Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 measure the voltage first at the time that the problem occurs. we need information to go by.
Markus9821 Posted September 3, 2012 Author Report Posted September 3, 2012 measure the voltage first at the time that the problem occurs. we need information to go by. Should be home tonight to try, I'll post the results when I can thanks.
8ight Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 measure the voltage first at the time that the problem occurs. we need information to go by. Don't forget to measure at the amp terminals too, also check RCAs for voltage and check the speaker terminals for voltage. I'm gonna hate
Kyblack76 Posted September 3, 2012 Report Posted September 3, 2012 What meter do ya own? Does it have a MIN/MAX feature on it? My method of trouble shooting low/high voltage, (snafu turned me on to this) is just push the leads through, into the P and G leads at the amp in question,.... Turn your meter on, correctly of course, Then, hit the MIN/MAX button,... and, well, just cruise around,... doing your thing,... Or do what you think caused the issue in the first place...... when the problem arises, pull over, and the meter will show you your HIGH, LOW, AND AVERAGE voltage throughout that entire time/test,....... everything you need to know... Done.. I thought i was getting my amp to shut down because of low voltage after a HO alty swap, frustrating as hell,...... i did this, while driving around for 4 days,.. writing down the voltage i saw at shutdown,....... and actually found out i was seeing HIGH spikes.....Spikes so high, my amplifer would shut off really quick,... i was way off, and wrong........... found the correct problem, and resolved it...... great luck........hope you get it figured out... Thanks a ton for the advice, I do believe my meter has a MIN/MAX feature on it (still not home to see). I did have my brother go out and bump the subs for a little, he texted me saying they seemed to be working okay. Once I get back I'm going to try cruising around for a bit. How did you end up solving your issue?
Kyblack76 Posted September 4, 2012 Report Posted September 4, 2012 cool.... i hope it helped,.. its funny,.. My mother in-law jumped in the Acura a week ago,.... back seat,... And she "sat" on my fluke,... lol,.... she was like, hey ky, what the hell is this? I told her, not to worry,... i drive around with my meter "plugged in" 85 percent of the time..... Also, with a "fix".... lets see what your problem is first bud.... Show us..... do some testing, and show us whats up...... this is the "fun" part,.. learning, and all that...... Wanna see what you come up with........ cheers and great luck ... SMD SUPER SELLER The Burban Build Blazer Build sold Acura trunk build sold
