dereileak
Reason: I had 2 broken ps3's, one from the YLOD, and another from a dead disk drive. I was gonna swap one disk drive to the other, but sony changed all the connections, so I decided on this little project Explination: A ps3 is a lot like a computer, has a 12v rail and a 5v rail for its power supply. Depending on what ps3 you have will determine how many amps your power supply will output, the older the ps3 the higher amount since the older ps3's are less efficient and use more power, hence why my ps3 heats up my whole room in the winter like an electric heater XD This old PS3 that I decided to use outputs 32 amps on the 12v rail without voltage sag and 3 amps on the 5 v rail. I decided to not use the 5v rail, and only the 12v. The underside of the power supply will specify what it is capable of outputting, the newer one did 21 amps 12v. 1. Rip apart your PS3, you will need a Phillips screw driver and a T10 torques drive. Getting to the power supply is quite simple, and doesn't take long. Here is a guide to get to this part. Follow steps up to picture #9 Click here for disassembly guide 2. There is a ground strap that needs to be connected to the metal casing, or to the original ground location for the power supply, this is for saftey (Power Supply Type 1) (Power Supply Type 2) Bend or cut the metal tab because the screw has to screw into it to hold on, you only need the small square of metal with the hole in it 3. There are different versions of power supplies, the main larger with 3 wires to supply ac power for the input is the same on all of them, but there is a separate harness with either 4 or 5 wires, and this changes which ones you need to connect. If you have the 5 wire harness, you need to cut the middle 3 wires, and attach the outer two together. If you have the 4 wire harness then you attatch the 1st and 3rd wires together. On both power supplies one reads 5v's and one is ground, and they basically activate a relay to turn the 12v rail on No Picture of the #1 power supply (Power Supply type 2) 4. Solider and tape these connections together 5. You have to rip the metal prongs from the mother board that go into the power supply, this is where you will solider your wires to them to allow for the power (Power Supply Type 1) Notice the two copper colored prongs, I labeled which is + and - by checking with a digital multimeter (Power Supply Type 2) 6. Now the rest is pretty simple, just solider your wires on the prongs, wrap them with electrical tape. Here is how I did mine, this is really up to you how you want it to turn out, I used a 30 amp fuse on the 12v line out just in case of a short. I also used alligator clips on the end of my wires (from my xs intellicharger recycle and save bitch !) for ease of use. New Tool in Action Hope you enjoyed this guide. This tool will let you recycle your old broken shit and turn it into some new useful stuff And now a random picture of my cat "Boot". 2006 Mazda3 Hatchback Black 5 Spd ManualPioneer 4300DVD2 Sundown SA-12 (34hz Tune, 3.22 cubes, 14.5 inches per cube, Triple Baffle)Kicker 10ZX2500.1 (2845 RMS) Sub AmpKicker 11ZX650.4 (705 RMS) Mid Amp -- (3 Amps)Kicker KQ3 Active CrossoverKicker KQ30 EqualizerKicker 09QS60.2 Components (Woven Carbon Cones)Kicker 09QS65.2 Components (Woven Carbon Cones) - (3 Sets)2/0 Gauge Electron Beam Technologies (3 Runs, 2 +, 1 -) 1/0 Gauge KNU Kollasal Flex (1 Run for -) 300 Ft Kicker X-Series 16 Gauge Speaker WireXS Power D3400 (Rear)XS Power D3100 (Front)Singer Externally Regulated Alternator (Being Built)+ The Love for Car Audio and BASS <3UBL Build Log <------- Click Here-------> Normal Build Log (For Comments)

Jessica
nice guide, Power supllies have cam along way, i remeber when i p.c. power suplly would only be 5amps at 12 and 15 at 5 at most I want to do a project like this but using 3 identical computer power supplies. I want to run the 5v rails in series between the 3 and get a 15v XXamp power supply. I've seen guides on how to do it and it involves removing the grounds on two of them and a couple other things. I have one right now that is 38a. The only thing i cant get a definite answer on is if you gain amperage this way too. I don't believe you do, but still 15v and 38a would be nice. And people throw away computer power supplies all the time. Rest in peace, walled 87 accord build log 03' Corolla build with AA Mayhem inside.
