Ended up trading a ’03 Kawasaki ZX-6R that I fixed up for my new DD, ’02 Miata. It’s not my first one, but it my first of the newer body style so I was interested to see if any parts of the interior had grown with the style change in ’99. Short answer……….nope! Still as cramped as I remembered(at least for an audio install that is).

Step 1, buy a hardtop! It’s the only chance I have at keeping any decent sound inside, especially if I plan on having the woofer in the same cabin. The trunk is out of the question lol.

One of the nice things about the new body style is that there is plenty of room to put a good sided driver in the door. Kicker Comp8s fit with room to spare as mids, running off Type-R crossovers and using Type-R tweeters. Crossovers are mounted on a board behind the passenger seat, and will share pics once it has been cleaned up a bit. Also put a healthy amount of sound deadener on the doors to close off as many holes as possible. Tweeters were mounted in the stock location in the door panels.

My brother from another mother(SVB847) helped me with the box calculations and we were able to get box tuned to 37. I was impressed considering how little space there is to work with.

The Sundown SA-8 is on an Alpine MRX-M100, and the doors are on an EFX 250c2 using a Rockford throwback distro block in the trunk. Nothing special, just mounted to a board in the trunk for now.

My goal was to just figure out a way to get the equipment in the car in the first place lol. Now that I’m there and everything sounds decent, I can move on to looking for a place to add an additional pair of speakers to the front, and rear, and move the spare tire to under the car so I can drop one of the amps into the tire well. Should clean things up a good bit more.

Updates as we move forward!

Because trading a bike you have $1700 invested in for a car that fetches $4500 all day seems like a nobrainer to me :). Considering both my other cars get 17 and 12 mpg, it's nice getting 25-30mpg for a change. It's crazy slow yet somehow still fun to drive.
