Do i lose quality? from CD to a USB memory (cant run CD's on my head unit)

Recommended Posts

It depends if you are converting to Lossless or Lossy formats.

WAV, FLAC, APE, WMA-Lossless, Apple-Lossless you can guess are lossless meaning they don't lose any audio information in the conversion

MP3, AAC, WMA are lossy formats. When you move to these, you throw away data to convert, but make for much smaller sizes. Contrary to popular belief, 320k MP3s are still lossy.

What formats your head unit are compatible with will be in the owners manual.

EDIT: hear about this a lot, but if you convert from MP3 back to a lossless format, it will only be as good as the mp3 was.

It's good. Do not care too about others' opinion. Your own idea is the most important. So do what you think right and good. Wish you luck.

if you are gonna do it, try to do at least 320. Yes, its still a compressed MP3 but i would be willing to bet 9 out of 10 people, maybe even 10 out of 10 can't tell the difference.

This is a really sticky subject. With MP3s, you can get much different quality just choosing different codec, even at the same bitrate. LAME only sounds good at 192k and up, whereas the Fraunhofer codec (L3ENC and MP3ENC) can do the same quality at 128k. Put the Fraunhofer codec at 192k and it kills most other MP3 codecs at 320k.

I bet if we did a side-by-side in your IS-F you could tell the difference. LOL
