Yeah my old man had a mountaineer a few years back, bought it at 60k miles, and it shat on him at 80k, so I'm pretty skeptical when it comes to fords, at least older ones... STEvil Posted December 8, 2012 Report Posted December 8, 2012 Yeah, the transmissions are junk.. and the explorer lost value just driving it off the lot. It earned the name "exploder" for a reason.. Chevy/GM 5.3's and 5.7's will last forever. They're not the greatest fuel economy wise with an automatic behind them, but the 4L60E and 4L80E last pretty good as long as you dont intentionally try to kill them. Watch for play in the transfer case (chain driven) and front diff, thats the weakest spot after about 150-200k miles if the 4x4 was used a lot. If you take care of the engine you can expect them to go forever lol. 4.6 is the best C/GM v-6 but its horrible fuel economy wise if you dont keep the electronics all working (o2 sensors, rotor/cap, plugs, wires) and clean/delete the cat.. Jeep 4.0 has similar issues fuel economy wise and has a tendency to leak but other than that the platform is solid as long as you dont beat it like a trail rig in stock form and expect it to stay perfect. Toyota motors are generally good, just gotta watch timing chain issues on some of them (the 4-bangers mostly) and overheating/pinging issues on a couple of the v-6's. Manual transmission will provide the best fuel economy but you need to be sure you're picking one that wont need servicing soon.. Good luck, 25mpg is about tops for 4x4's under 5.0L usually... Any time you have have a power wire next to your frame put some rubber hosing (or cut up an innertube) around it.
