What alts can fit a Civic

Recommended Posts

I am heading over to the junkyard today to see if me and my dad can find an Alternator to put into my car. Anyone know of any other type of alternators from other cars that could still fit in a Civic DX, 91'. My stock one is 60A, but if I can find one that will fit that puts out more, woo hoo. Any hep is appreciated.

Check any Honda Accords or Preludes. If you find a 91 Civic alt while you're there, pull it off the junk car, then go walk around and compare it to the other Honda's. The easiest way though in my opinion would be to call Mechman or Excessive amperage and see which ones can be easily swapped in and out between the cars.

I do not understand what you mean by contacting them? To ask them what they can make for me? Or can they tell me sizes or something?

They should have a list of which alts from other vehicles would swap into yours, they know more about the plug configurations and the cases and bolt patterns from the alts. We all know that they can make them for your Civic, but you should just be able to ask them what alts from other cars will fit yours.

When you see the companies post up new alts, you usually see them post a fitment list like:

Fits:

02 - 05 Honda Civic

02- 08 Honda CRV

98 - 04 Honda accord

It's just worth a shot to give them a call.

I'll pull up my Honda data and take a look though and see if I can find which cars have the same alt though.

Thanks man, I came across this http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2986970, and it seems the highest alt honda even put into cars is a 90A out of a Si or a Integra, and a 95 out later integra. Hopefully those will be able to fit

I think the only problem you'd run into with that is that the plug is different.... I believe yours is an OBD1 vehicle, the later models are OBD2.

All B-Series alternators share the same casing and will bolt up to a B
series engine. The difference is in the OBD version of the Alternator
and the plug used. All 88-95 B-series alternators are the same and will
work for any B-series that is obd-0 or obd-1. Obd-2 alternators are
different and require minor wiring modifications listed below.

Difference Between B-Series Alternators

OBD-0 & OBD-1 Alternators are interchangeable and share the same plug.

OBD-2 Alternators can be used but they use a different square plug which will require minor wiring changes to make it work

This pic shows the difference between the plugs

Here is a quick guide on the alternator wiring pinout conversion.

Alternator Belt for B-Series

Alternator belts are measured in 2 ways (how many channels the belt has
and how long the belt is.) use 4-channel belts that are either 300cm
or 305cm long. This is how the universal part#s work for the
alternator belts.

Alternator Belt for EF with B-Series - #040300 or #040305

Differences Between D-Series Alternators

There are two different versions of the D-series alternator. The big
difference between the two on a D-series motor is the pulley. 1988-1991
alternators use a three rib serpentine belt, while 1992-1995 alternators
use a four rib belt (similar to ALL B-series). Also, the 1992+
alternators are somewhat bigger, and appear to be higher output units.

How to tell the difference between D-series & B-series alternators?

The easiest way to tell them apart is to look at the top mounting
point on the alternator. The D-series alternators are threaded and
B-series alternators are straight through.

Is it possible to use a D-series alternator on my B-series?

Yes. In most cases it is possible - but it will require a bit of
creativity. It can be done but I would only recommend this as a short
term solution until you can get a proper alternator.

Lol that is the link I posted, It actually took me a few times of searches to get that to come up. I know how to solder and all that so if I must, I can can a OBD2 and use it, but I would prefer not to do that.
