Battery is fried... But before I replace it. What happened?

Recommended Posts

My car has 3 batteries - all of the are datasafe NPX 150-rfr. It's a 40ah VRLA AGM battery. VRLA = valve regulated lead acid.

Issue is that the battery's resting voltage is fine - 13v. But any time a load is applied to it, the voltage tanks. A 10a load will make it drop to 10.2v. A 20a load makes it drop to 9.8v.

Other pertinent information:

It still starts my car (weak, but it does it).

This is also only with the single front battery. I have yet to test the back two, but they don't seem as bad.

Alt is a DC power 270XP. It charges at 15.5 when cold, tapers off to 15.0 when warm, 15.3 when driving above 40mph with some air flowing through the engine bay.

I hook up my batteries to the big red XS charger 2-3 times a week, overnight, on the AGM setting.

My stereo is almost exclusively powered off the alternator. Voltage only dips into battery voltage at idle - down to 12.2-12.3v. That rarely happens though. When revving or driving, voltage stays above 14v always.

Ideas?

Maybe the charging voltage was too high?

Damn dude, that sucks, Do the batteries hold a charge after resting for over a day?

It sounds like they've been over charged.

15.5v is a little high. For cold start it's okay but 15.3v is too high for heated up and driving around. I mean you're getting up into 14v charge rates at that. Would explain why the resting voltage seems normal but when a load is applied the battery has no capacity. 14.4 is good for best longevity of your batteries but you know with bassheads and that little extra power they want :P

i shook this one kids hand and it just folded in mine. long story short i fucked his girlfriendso.. yeah..

You want this to happen to you? Give decent handshakes people.

Yup they sit at 13v even after a week. It's almost as if the batteries "shrunk" in their apparent capacity

I don't have much control over the charging voltage lol. That's what the alt charges at - a bit high for me, but I figure if that what the manufacturer set it at it should be safe?

Hmm I guess not. What do you think - the electrolyte boiled off or something?

Didn't you install a diode on your car so that it would get tricked into charging higher? Or was that on the stock alt?

Anything above 14.8 will gas a AGM once hot, I have seen it happen, prolonged over a period of time just continues to reduce the capacity of the battery. That is what happened.

That was on the stock alt. Diode-less, the DC alt still charges higher than the stock alt did with the diodes

Ahh ok.

Well... This sucks. I guess I need new batteries now :(

And as a separate issue: why would DC power set the voltage on their alts so high that it damages the batteries? The rear batteries have been in the car since September, and the front battery(the one that is having issues) was installed late November.

I'm going externally regulated.. So this shouldn't be an issue any more if I set the charging voltage lower, correct?

But still - I'm pretty upset right now that DC would set the charging voltage so high that is fries one of my batteries in 3 months. I mean seriously: WTF?

Ask them, I don't want to put words in there mouth. :)

And yes external reg you can go as low as 13.8 if you wanted to which is perfectly fine. I have mine set at 14.3 for daily driving, never moves, hot or cold.
