Best port opening for music preferences. Looking for general rule of thumb.

When building a box port opening is, I would say, a crucial element to designing a box. What is your take or general rule of thumb when it comes to port opening for various kinds of music. Music genres to port opening size (preferably in sq in. to 1 cu ft net volume). Rock, pop, trance, metal, hip hop, r&b, jazz, dub step, techno, etc. What is your rule of thumb and for what music is it for?

Port area is not based on sq in per cuft, it is based on Sd, Xmax, and tuning frequency.

Port size is not related to the type of music you listen to. Frequency response is based on the t/s parameters of the driver and the box design (net volume and tuning frequency).

The correct sub and a box designed with a flat response should cover anything you throw at it.

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.

If you want flat inside a car just go for sealed or a 1:1 (or so) 4 order bandpass. Ported will not play flat in most car setups, it also has to do with the drivers themselves.
