You can cut the aluminum with the circular saw depending on the blade. If the carbide tips are small you're ok. If they stick out like a wood cutting blade you're going to kill yourself.

As long as you have the shims in with the aluminum rods you should be ok.

You could use turnbuckles inside to allow slowly letting the top plate down, though the amount of pull force its going to have may just strip the threads.. this thing is going to be retarded to get down softly.

If you built some shims you could use external turnbuckles that are larger that attach outside the motor and use the shims to stick into the motor.

Why not pick up a threaded rod or two from home depot make the into studs drill some holes in the plate where the outer poles are tap said holes and "unscrew" the plate down onto the poles?

knock that gap down to 1/4" I say.

If I did, getting the aluminum pieces out would be next to impossible without damaging the plate surface, and I'm going to seal it to prevent anymore rust so I want to leave it unscratched if possible. It might also be close enough to move the magnet poles around and throw off alignment.

How am I going to drill into the plate? It's magnetized, and the drill bit would walk everywhere unless it was stainless, but then it would be too soft to drill the steel, then the tap would get stuck to the poles too. I wasn't sure what you were trying to say about unscrewing the plate though? Do you mean feed the rods through the top plate and the bottom plate? Where would the bolt-nut go?

You drill it with a drill bit. Probably a tungsten one.. well, several. Last time I did stainless it took me about 15 of them.

You use a center-punch to mark the start point so the bit doesnt walk.

Tap would get stuck to what? Its a tap, it makes threads, its not going to get stuck anywhere unless you use it incorrectly.

You thread the rod through the plate and put it in the center of the neo's then turn the rod to slowly lower the plate onto them. No need for a nut really, but you could put one on the end of the rod thats not against the neo's to allow easier turning of the rod.

Purple did that with his solox build...tapped and used bolts to drop the top plate softly onto the slugs. Still had to line up his pole piece exactly and on one of the mos powerful ferrite mags around. No reason you couldn't use long bolts the same as the threaded rod...probably only need three or four nice high grade hardware.

I'm still a little confused, and the tap would get stuck to the magnetized plate I'm saying. I CAN'T DRILL OR USE ANYTHING MAGNETIC NEAR THE BOTTOM PLATE, just so that is crystal clear to everybody. Sorry I have had terrible insomnia for the last 4 days, haven't seen more than about 9 hours of sleep combined.

You DON'T touch the bottom plate with any type of tap or drill or anything.. Look in purples thread about getting his top plate off the solox and back on without demag...

You would just need longer bolts.

No threading the bottom plate, only the top plate. You could even us the current holes for the basket and make them tapped through the top plate.
