You DON'T touch the bottom plate with any type of tap or drill or anything.. Look in purples thread about getting his top plate off the solox and back on without demag...

You would just need longer bolts.

No threading the bottom plate, only the top plate. You could even us the current holes for the basket and make them tapped through the top plate.

They're already fully tapped though. But how would threading blots through the top plate only work? it would still slide around once I stated to crank them wouldn't it?

like I said, I can't even think clearly with this insomnia, I woke up and noticed that my alarm clock was between my mattresses, but I don't remember doing that last night...

First posts show him using bolts to lift the top plate off, and he used the same thing to lower it.

Same exact idea, tap the top plate use long enough rod or bolts and lower it slowly the last bit. Nothing will get stuck, and you will lower your chances of it snapping together or shifting,

They would also allow you to tighten the bolts and lift the toplate if it needed to shift..so you get more then one attempt.

Although, if you shim and use bolts, shouldnt need to shift anything.

If you use holes you are going to mount the basket with, make sure you oil the threaded rod as stainless steel has a tendancy to "gall" dry threads which will cause the threaded rod to seize.

Good point, I didn't think about that even though I have experienced it. Turns something easy into a pain in the ass.

ohh I see, but I would need some long ass bolts to reach the bottom plate, and with that much magnetic force, I'm not sure it it would work out very well?? Maybe though.

Use all-thread.

its rod with thread from top to bottom, cut to whatever length you want. Put a nut at top, weld it in place if you want, and away you go.

I doubt strength of the threaded rod will be a concern, with it shimmed in the middle it wont have any side to side play and the load will be almost 100% vertical, when lowering it I would go small amounts on each one though, like 1/8 of a turn and just take it all slow. Should workout fine,

What size bolts do you have for the basket? Thickness and thread type? Also if you would rather skip a step welding a nut and cutting the rod I am sure you can get bolts long enough. I would go to a fastener store, we have a few around here that only carry bolts/nuts etc and they have everything lol. Im positive you could get a long enough bolt.

It sounds like a great idea there no denying that. I would definitely do it unless I wasn't concerned about one thing; drilling all these holes would mess with the magnetic field wouldn't it? It might not be a lot but I'm going for the least amount of power loss possible here.

Also the bolt's I'm using are 5/16" x 1" grade 8 (zinc plated steel I believe)

and to be honest, I would see there being an issue near the end, once the plate gets close, the steel is A36 so it's soft enough, trust me on that, I could easily see it stripping straight down and destroying the threads inside. Especially since the threads are pretty fine, it wouldn't take much to make it slip IMO. I might be wrong, but the power of these magnets is hard to fully comprehend until you see them in action first hand. I'm already betting that the aluminum rods will make a slight dent when the plate lands on them, but it should be insignificant.

P.S the whole weekend I was thinking about how I could twist the plate if need be while trying to attach it, I finally found a reasonable answer: if it gets off a little I could screw the basket in tight, then using the basket like a big torque wrench, twist the plate, I find this might be better since the rods would not guarantee perfect alignment unless the had a solid base in the bottom plate, but the basket would give me better torque.
