goodvibez Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 What welder are you using? And what thickness metal? Just this little lincoln welder...no shielding gas but my whole battery rack was welded together just fine and have used it allot on projects before but I always ask my talented freinds to do it... ...just some 1"x1" angle iron 1/8" thick...nothing too crazy...like I said this is just me trying it out from what I see people do... ...just need dome pointers from tommylee and my other freind who welds for a living and I'm sure I'll make some more improvements...I have a pretty good idea about welding just no hands on experience Funny how the people who have a louder system than you will usually give you a compliment about your setup because they know how much blood, sweat, time, and money you put into it. The people who criticize or try and one up you....have a p.o.s to no system at all and will tell you all about this "other" guys system! Saddley I'm sure if I meet this "other" guy...he will probably tell me he thinks your just as annoying as I think you are! I'm not compensating, just proud of fabricating! goodvibez Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 ok so here is my first bead...all the chicken scratch above it was me trying to dial it in...only took a little bit till I was ok with it. Then the first weld on the actual bracket it's self..nothing pretty but I was fine with it The rest were filthy popping bubble gum, but I did manage to get enough decent ones that it was good enough for this purpose. Glad no one but me will ever see this haha Lock nuts on with grade 8 bolts Now this thing is SOLID! No movement nothing...fine by my standards..very happy with final outcome got one crimped but have to help my girl move some shiz so all I could get done...the white stuff is just silicone to help the fuse holders stay...dries clear hope to get the alts charging these tomorrow Funny how the people who have a louder system than you will usually give you a compliment about your setup because they know how much blood, sweat, time, and money you put into it. RossGo Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 With no gas, that's not bad. I'm sure your arms hate you tho, cause it pops so bad without a shield. I was gonna give setting recommendations, but I don't have much experience off the gas Yes I have a lot of stereo weight. I was gonna give setting recommendations, but I don't have much experience off the gas Haha yeah it wasn't too bad rolled the sleeves of my work shirt down....your right its really rice crispy's(snap, crackle and pop)...couldn't find the welding gloves till after I was done lol just used regular basic working gloves did just fine...but yeah still got me a few times Been working at the family buisness since I was 8 and we've always had plenty of onsite welding equip. Fair amount of different machines and welders around and yet it took me 14 years to be like...sure I'll give it a try Haha! Better late than never smh...usually when people offered to let me run a few beads its was something that needed to be done right...this was perfect...no one will see it and it doesn't have be super crazy strong... But while in the vice I did grab the piece and give it good twist back and forth several times and did not budge so even with the poop welds I did it will suffice! scooter99 Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 This makes me feel better. I'm about to fire mine up soon too. Need to start learning so I can build those battery racks etc. My understanding is 75/25 mix is the best to go with. Little more expensive but well worth it. I have a neighbor who's gonna come watch me and give me some pointers. He does welding for a living as well. He's got one of those big effing welders on the back of his truck. You know, the ones you need a flatbed for etc. Craziness! Anyway, looks good man. Nice job for the first try! Facebook Page: S99Creations 2006 F250 Lariat Build
goodvibez Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 Thanks man, just need more practice and a little more guidance is all really..I dont' really know why we don't have any gas hooked up? We have plenty of bottles around..I guess just need to build a decent cart for the welder so it has the gas stay with it...we will see...although it was frustrating..I did like it...feels like it's something I've needed to be able to do in my life haha...probably could have used it allot for this kind of stuff! goodvibez Posted May 21, 2014 Report Posted May 21, 2014 well got little progress to report Got the rear batteries now charging Had to use the SMD AMM-1 this is resting volts..they were restingat 12.7 before I hooked them up..not bad because I had two of them unhooked since last november and 1 has never seen anything(brandnew) then they matched the front batteries at 13.1 when I hooked all the fuses up and 14.6 running came out too blurry but the max was 14.8 volts right after startup I'm sure it was just the alts getting fired up and compensating all fused up On a sad note I ran over my heat gun backing out of the garage...obliterated into a pile of lego's....haha there goes like 10 bucks from harbor freight! kinda sucked I needed it today tried using a hair dryer cough not mine....did not work lol but found my mini torch and it worked ok Funny how the people who have a louder system than you will usually give you a compliment about your setup because they know how much blood, sweat, time, and money you put into it.
