Any time you switch from Standard to Network, and vice versa, you must reset the unit for the change happen. This prevents accidental switching.

As for it sounding like ass; when you go through initial settings, there is a digital attenuation(Ithink thats what it is called) setting. You can choose high, low, or off. Set it to high. Also make sure that auto volume feature is off, the one that adjusts volume for roadnoise.
