After 25% throttle no more acceleration?

Recommended Posts

so my gf bought this miata and I finally drove it the other day and I found something really weird

first off its a 91 and has a stupid shift kit on it

that being said 75% of the movement in the gas pedal does nothing, the last 75% to be exact. the first quarter is normal but from a quarter to mashed in the floorboard there is no change at all.

Also, I noticed the car shifts stupid early. Even with your foot hard down it will shift just before 4k and the damn thing redlines at 6.5k

At first I thought the car just had a bitch motor but I honestly think something else is afoot. Any ideas?

Possible throttle cable is stretched? Have someone hold the pedal on the floor, and physically look at the throttle plate, see how far it's opening. Something that's quick to check, may not be the issue at all, though.

thats exactly what I thought to begin with but then I drove it. Ill have to look at the throttle cable see if that is all good. maybe I am just used to cars that work better but never have a I drove a car that would not get to its redline and that list of cars includes a 92 buick lesabre

something doesn't seem right about it

you might take it to the mazda service center and have it hooked up to the OBD1 scanner. the car might be in limp mode. i believe mazda was still using limp mode until the mid 90's around the time OBD2 was starting to roll out

Some cars have a detent cable, if the bushings are bad in it or it's adjusted wrong then the transmission doesnt know how much throttle the engine is getting so it shift early and won't downshift on hills.

It goes from the throttle to the transmission.
