A Wall In An Eclipse

Recommended Posts

You're not concerned that the bottom of the box will blow out with just foam there?!?!? :o

I would pull the subs, glass the rear seating area-floor and make that an actaul enclosure B4 I EVER ran it hard....I can imagine the pressure just liftin the box up enough to shoot air and foam particles out under the wall/face and high numbers goin bye-bye.

That aside-It looks fairly kosher-nice choice on the CVR 15's over the comp 12's I bet it makes a world of diff....as long as the box will hold up and you get at least 500-600rms to each 15.

Nope, it's pretty tough stuff when it cures and it's been coated with resin a few times, no worries. If it hits high enough to blow that seal, I'll happily vacuum up the foam, pull it apart and fix it .... :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I spent a few days and a couple sheets of wood experimenting and am now down to 2 15's from the original 4 I wanted to put in there. The do-over has the box at just under 9 cubic feet and I'm running about 800 watts per speaker. In 15 years, this is my first attempt at a ported box and so far I'm quite impressed... didn't realize what I what I was missing out on! Since this was my first attempt, it was just thrown together because I was sure it would sound like shit and I'd have to redo it... it actually sounds pretty good but it doesn't have the strength/reinforcements that it needs so it has to be redone anyways. Here's what it looks like now...

Before I redo this, I have a question about port size.... other than displacement, does the size make any difference if it's tuned the same? Right now, the port is 14Wx4Hx7D and there's no shortage of air blowing through. According to the spreadsheet I used to calculate this, I can go up to 18Wx6Hx20D and keep it tuned to about 36-37hz but I'm wondering how that will affect things.

Current setup:

Port size: 14Wx4Hx7D

56 sq in of port area

4.24 cubes/sub

36.76 hz

Proposed Setup:

Port size: 18Wx6Hx20D

108 sq in of port area

3.92 cubes/sub

36.05 hz

You guys have any thoughts or suggestion on this? What will I gain/lose by having a bigger port?

Looking good man. At least there will be more power to the 2 subs now. Wat did you hit with your old system by the way?

I never got it on the meter. The shop that puts on the local shows sent the meter out for calibration and didn't get it back in time for the last show. Next show is April 5 so I still have time to play with different ideas. The 2 15's definitely sounds better than the 3 I had in there.... could be more power, could be more airspace, could be the ported box... or a combo of everything.

I think about 100sq. inches of port would be better for that size box or maybe a little less with 800 watts per sub.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot and see how it sounds... it's only another 1/2 sheet of wood, some fiberglass and some carpet.

Just a quick update since I redid the face of the box with a bigger port... still don't have a meter to see what the hell it's doing, but it's definitely better now! I ended up with 89"/port tuned to 36hz but I got in a hurry to get it back together and skipped adding the braces inside, gotta go back now and add some to tighten it up again.

This is only my second attempt at a ported box so there's still lots to learn.... is it safe to say that you always want the biggest port possible for the box you're building? With everything else being equal (except for losing some airspace due to bigger port), going from 56" to 89" port made a world of difference.

And, since everyone loves pictures... here's how I spent my weekend.

The new 'face'...

Starting to fiberglass the back cuz I'm still using shitty wood

All back together and happy again
