bass boost question... curiosity.

Recommended Posts

okay first a little bit about the setup.

two mtx t7ks semisealed (its got a leak in it right around the submount) box.

4.04 gross ft^3 box.

slightly underpowered running 375w a piece.

my amp is set up as follows.

gain at about a quarter of full. subsonic is set at 25hz. the bass boost is currently set at 5db at 45hz (its self set bass center frequency). now I can't recall who it was but somebody told me to never use bass boost. why? idk. but it seems with the two amps I've personally had experience with it seems you get no kind of bass with out a little boost. kinda like zero boost actually cuts the bass by 6db 6 is no boost or cut and 12 is actually a 6 db boost over zero. anyone with recording experience will understand that. but its what it seems like to me.

so back to topic. If I bump the boost up to 6 or 7db seeing as I am still slightly underpowered and in a sealed box... would I really being doing massive harm? I'm just curious... once I get my aeroport I'll be resetting everything any way but that won't be for a couple weeks... so help me out some!

I'm happy enough where I am... but a lil more... would be the cherry on top so... what do you think?

One does not simply

Use bass boost

You seem to be a baller on a budget. Be smart and don't use it

Would hate for your equipment to break

But Trey, he's underpowering his stuff. Lol. (joke). Smart thing is DON'T DO IT. Sure, underpowering and all, nice. Just get better equipment. Do it right or don't do it. /end thread.

true. which is y I asked. but I'm back to work full-time again so I'll push it up a tad, got it up to 6 and ill myself satisfied. dropped my gain a lil bit let it hit a time or two... check my dust covers for hotness they were room temp so let it go a lil while longer and did the same... it seems to be happy. So I'll leave it there for now.and may turn it down a bit once I get my aeroport in :D

I mean would I rather buy new subs or get my highs and mids? definitely the highs and mids :D then I'll crank the bass boost and get the 15s I'm eye balling :D

I've always boosted EVERY system I've had. Up to 18db at times with No problems...ever. I can understand why someone would tell u not to use it, but your not running enough power to cause a problem.

:WTFBubble::deadhorse:

(please don't listen to this guy)

:suicide-santa:

Why do people keep messing with buttons/dials they don't understand.

Bass boost is a solid no in most cases because the bass in today's music is already very powerful.

Bass boost on the back of the amp is a useless solution, a bass boost knob would be better since you only need it for a few songs. (even then it's not good because it's set at a frequency)

The bass boost button will never cut the signal if you put it at 0, obviously it will be quieter and maybe seem as if it is cutting if the rest of the system isn't set up correctly.

So why not just turn up the gain?

If you have recording experience you should know what those dials/sliders are for.

Thinking is the root of all problems...

You ALWAYS get what you pay for.

Bass boost will NOT damage a subwoofer. . .

Incorrect gain adjustments do not damage a subwoofer. . .

Turning the volume knob up too high damages a subwoofer. . .

If you understand those statements, you will not have any problems.

Current system:

1997 Blazer - (4) Customer Fi NEO subs with (8) American Bass Elite 2800.1s

Previous systems:

2000 Suburban - (4) BTL 15's and (4) IA 40.1's = 157.7 dB at 37 Hz.

1992 Astro Van - (6) BTL 15's and (6) IA 40.1's = 159.7 dB at 43 Hz.
