so i insalled my mechman 170amp alternator, im running a crunch GP3000d. big 3 upgrade, all 1/0awg, optima yellow top under the hood and a kitneik hc2400 in the back, i was bumping tonight just played a song and my voltage dropped to 11.9 for a sec well with my stock alt it would drop to 11.6 i mean, idk if this amp is just so damn power hungry i need 10 batteries or my optima is taking a shit lol

Have you clamped your alt to be sure it's putting out? Check for belt slip? Where are you measuring voltage

What/where is your volt meter hooked up to?

How do you know you don't have slip?

Proper belt tension is important. I doubt its the alternator not putting out current but a PROPER belt tension is extremely important. Can't stress that enough,

Beyond that I'd just clamp your draw? And clamp your alternator?

Edit. As a mechanics son, I've be lectured up and down about proper belt tension. I have some belt squeal when under load, but I know I have the perfect tension. Over tight ruins your herrings and pulleys and hurts output. Under tighten will lose output and hurt belt, maybe causing the whole belt to slip off which is REALLY bad,

I may have hated dad at points, but I've come to realize all the mechanic stuff he taught me is a good thing.

My amp.

I don't know how to check for belt slip, don't hear anything or what not.

I never knew this about alternators, thanks for that post Jeff. I'll buy a new belt

My belt looks new tho, it has the grooves in it, along with the writing on it, you think it's a few months old, that's why I assume it is not my belt..

Look on your alt. Any sort of black, powdery residue on it?

And measure your voltage drop at the amp with a DMM
