Voltage drop-not what you think

Recommended Posts

I'm having quite a simiar problem but with a stock alt. Any ideas??? So worried i might have to replace it. I'm on such a tight budget for my current build. When my car is just idling. voltage rests about 12.1-12.4. Then as soon as im up in the 800-1000 RPM range, its like the alternator finally kicks in and my voltage goes right up to 13.3-14.

Your idle rpm's seem low even for a cavalier. Is it and auto or manual? I'm assuming it's auto to be idling that low. Mine idles just around 600 rpm or so once its warmed up which is about normal for at least the auto 03+ ecotec's. Perhaps you have a bigger issue if your only idling at 400 rpm? No rough idle or anything else?

Yeah, it's automatic. 2003 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L Ecotech engine. It idles around 4-500 rpms don't have an exact number. Don't have any other noticeable problems though and it's got about 183 or 184k on the original engine

See I really wanted to do this, but I don't quite know how I'd do it to my engine. If I can figure out how to then I definitely will.

I know TaylorFade made this video that shows for his CRX, but I couldn't find anything like that on my engine. And every mechanic place I've asked about it has no clue how to bump up the idle rpms either

The design of that alt not being centered around low idle is what is holding you back. You may be stuck on this one.
