kickass audio Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 The old recone assembly looks like you have the little spade terminals built on the tinsel leads still. If that is you need to unsolder them. The spade is what you solder the tinsels onto when you do the recone. You keep the push terminals attached to the basket and just solder the tinsel leads onto the little tab that sticks up on the speaker terminal and then cut off the excess tinsel lead that sticks out after it is soldered on. What you have to do is unsolder the little rings that are soldered to your old recone's tinsel leads. Then you need to screw back on the speaker terminals. Once you have the terminals screwed on with the little ring terminal part sticking out on the basket you need to solder the new tinsel leads onto them and then cut off the excess. One thing you need to worry about is making sure you get the polarity right since you removed the spring terminals. If you connect a 9v battery to the speaker so that the positive of the battery goes to the positive (or allegedly positive) wire on the speaker terminal and then the negative of the battery to the negative speaker terminal you should see the cone assembly get pushed upwards a little. If this happens then you know your polarity is correct. If the cone sucks inwards then you have the polarity backwards and need to either reverse the little spring terminals so it is the correct polarity or make note of this and just rewire the sub correctly when it is installed. The reason the tinsels look different is that you have a upgraded tinsel setup where instead of one large tinsel you have several thinner ones, its supposed to help from preventing the tinsel leads from snapping from what I heard. 2004 GMC Envoy1 XS power S3400 batt under the hood and 4 XS Power D3100's battery installed in the rear by the amps0 gauge power wire from front to backAlpine iva-w205 touchscreen dvd/cd/mp3/ipod/am/fm/gps headunitSundown Audio SAX-200.4 amp for my mids and highs8 gauge speaker wire from amp to woofer270 amp Mechman AltRockford Fosgate T1652-s component speakersRockford Fosgate 3Sixty.2 sound processorRca's from Rockford Fosgate and Monster Cable14 gauge speaker wire for the mids and highs1 18" Ascendant Audio SMD Dual 1 ohm with custom Black & Blue carbon fiber and hand signed dustcapBox: 5.66 cubic feet net volume box tuned to 30.13Hz with 1.5" wide wooden dowels and 1.5" thick baffle1 DC Audio 5.0k amp wired to .5 ohms nominal with an imp rise of 1.35 ohms for the single AA SMD 18"Future Vision 8000k 50w bi-xenon projector HID's with 4300k 35w fog lightsLink to my build: Buildupdates/progress

kickass audio Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 i have all new hardware, I don't think I have to unsolder anything Wrong! You said you unscrewed the sub this is not how you take apart a recone. You keep the tinsel leads on BUT you cut through them, you remove the recone assembly and then unsolder the left over tinsel leads that you cut earlier. Take a look at your old recone, see the little metal tabs that have holes through them for you to pass the screw through for the speaker terminals? That should NOT still be attached to the old recone. It should instead have been left bolted to the basket and speaker spring terminals.
Cox Posted September 5, 2013 Author Report Posted September 5, 2013 But it came with more. Am I just missing something??? And basically just do this but with both loops? kickass audio Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Really? Hmm thats something new to me. I am sorry. Yeah in your case you need to just stick the tinsel leads through the hole like you did in the picture and then use some solder flux and solder the hell out of them and cut off the excess wire. You still need to do like I mentioned of making note which terminal is positive and negative unless you happened to remember before you removed the old terminals. Just get some little clips to hold down the spider landing and hookup a little battery to the speaker and see if it sucks in or out when you apply power to it. edit: if you happen to have problems sneaking in the tinsel leads into the little hole on the new terminal you can try to make the terminal's hole a little larger or longer to fit them in with otherwise you can bend the terminal off to the side and just solder the leads together one on top the other on the little tab. It is preferred to stick the tinsel through the hole like you pictured though.
