let me get this right quick... you are basically putting a normal box in the trunk then porting the trunk?

it should be the same as tunning any other box. I use winisd for my 6ths but torres get pretty close results to winisd. enter your cubes of free air... total trunk volume minus the total displaced by the inside box

keep in mind this idea seems like the trunk has massively more air than what the box takes up so you may peaky closer ti the high side tuning. just a heads up

Not to high jack your thread but what does all this 4th order, 5th order, and 6th order mean?

2017 Chevrolet Silverado LT CC - Will be running 2-3 DC Audion M3 8s, unsure of amp, Mechman 320 amp alt.

2005 Ford F150 - Bagged on 24s, fully shaved, raised bed floor.

It might be better to actually make a box inside the box. If you try to use the trunk that would be similar to using a leaky or flexing box. As for the 6th order I thought that you tune one wicked high like in the 50-60hz and one way low like in the 28's. I'm most likely wrong on both of those numbers. But I thought I read something about it a few weeks back.

To answer the guy asking about 4th and 6th orders (no 5th) ... They are bandpass boxes that increase efficiency, and with a 4th order, increases frequency range and efficiency... And with 6th orders mostly just efficiency but some of them can still have crazy frequency range. Example, mike singer. You might ask, why doesn't everyone do a 4th or 6th order then since they are so much louder then sealed or ported... Well because not all drivers are meant for 4th orders and 6th orders are way hard to design in most cases, and it would be better to go simple ported with woofers that are good for either ported or 6th order boxes. 4th orders are slightly easier to design then 6th, still not super super easy, but also the driver in a 4th order should be able to perform in both sealed and ported boxes to work in a 4th order properly.

4th and 6th orders also take up WAY more space then simple ported or sealed boxes. Sometimes it's easier to just add the extra woofers to take up that space that the 4th or 6th would take up and just stick with ported.

I'm trying to use trunk as a box. I will seal trunk walls with either foam or second skin to eliminate the rattling. Also, one side will have the 4 channel amp glassed in there and the other will have 2 batteries mounted. So I only will have the space in the middle, which should be around 8 CF, or less. The box will be 1 CF.

I'm trying to figure out what the ski hole port is currently tuned to.

I might grab 2 12" to help move more air out of the trunk, but for now it will be 2 10's.

First to clarify things... subs with a low EBP perform better in 4th order boxes and subs with high EBPs perform better in 6th order boxes. And then, subs with mid range EBPs (50-90) will perform well in either. ← And to further clarify.... GENERALLY speaking. Yes, I know some of you used a low EBP sub in a 6th and it slammed. That's the exception, not the rule. Also, when using a low EBP in a vented alignment, get ready to take up a huge amount of space in order to get a decent curve.

Sixth order bandpass boxes are usually tuned 1, 1.5 or two octaves apart. Some say only one of those three options will work every time and some say none of them will. I've tuned 6ths 2.5 octaves apart and they performed well and I've tuned them a half octave apart with good results so I don't subscribe to that theory as a rule of thumb for design. It is, however, a good place to start.

As far as box tuning, here's a good resource. Also, get hold of a copy of WinISD Beta if you plan to build a parallel tuned 6th or WinISD Pro (it's free) if you plan to build a series tuned 6th.

I have very little experience with series tuned 6th orders so I have nothing of value to add to the discussion of how to achieve a flat response from them.

never heard of a 5th order.

the orders has to do with sections and ports... I read once a description but it currently evades me. but a section adds a number and a section with a port adds more of a number....

damn I'd say make the inside box slightly bigger. you want the ratio of front to back to be closer I like 1:1.5 the bigger side should be the deep tuned side.it gices you a flatter response between the tunings and spread the tunings out some. if you are going for a good sq type of a 6th. other wise tune closer and have a one note loud as hell box. its all about what you want from it.
