Is this gonna blow my car up?

Recommended Posts

My car is a 2004 impala. Big three done (well, Big 6 really) stock alt. stock 800 cca battery, my question regards turning up the voltage with a boost module. I charge at 14.6 volts at the moment but would like to see 15.9 with the module installed. If i turn it up that far am i gonna fry my ECU? or anything else? anything to consider when daily driving a car with boosted voltage? any experiece with the product?

Any input is appreciated. thanks everyone

Why do you want voltage that high?

Your stock batt should not exceed a charge of 14.6-maybe 14.9 if it's a wet cell. Over charging will kill the battery.

Your stock alt should not be over driven when the internals are not designed to do so.

Your vehicle electronics may be damaged with 15.5V or be good up to 18V. That may not be known until someone tries it. Every car is different.

Your amplifiers and other audio items may or may not be suited for higher voltage, must check operating specs first.

the amps will be fine all the way up to 18 volts. If I replaced the stock batt with an AGM xspower it would work in theory? i want that voltage because It will pull significantly more wattage out of the amps

why not just get bigger amplifiers instead of risking electrical components in your car...

i wouldnt turn up stock system any higher than 15. the risk of frying something is too great. the amount of money youd spend finding the broken electronic equipment and replacing you might as well get a new amp or more batteries to put out the same amount of power

Cars are created for 12 volts. A boost module is to make the alternator 16volt etc. 16 volts are what the use in high performance racing etc. You electrical system cannot handle 16 volts you would have to upgrade system and you are going to damage computer in car also. You need to upgrade alternator with bigger capacity that is the way to go. Fry your ECU the smell terrible also when fried! You could cause a fire also. Stick with what is supposed to be there. Nothing over 14 volts. Car batteries only store 12+ volts.

AGM batts are limited to charge to 2.4V per cell. So a 12V AGM batt should not charge above 14.4V. (It has 6 cells).

You could do a 14V batt and charge it up to 16.8V. But I would recommend a split voltage system to run the rest of the car off of 12V.

You would need a new alternator to do this properly. Also a step down module, 14V batts for the amps and a 12V batt for the car.

It's very involved and not recommended to do without experience and guidance.

An easier, safer, and cheaper alternative is to use larger amplifiers.

Unless you are running 11KW or higher amplifiers already, then there is undoubtedly larger options out there for you.

new question, scrap the voltage booster Idea.

If I replace stock battery with equivalent ( or as big as I can fit) xs power, leave the alt, and do two runs of 2/0 cca Sky high wire to a AQ 3500.1 with my overdone big three. Is that an under built electrical system for that amp? granted there's a four channel involved too ( only draws 100 amps)

It would be 480 amps of current draw plus whatever the factory harness needs. (roughly)
