hdorre
I don't really drive much anymore because there really isn't a need. Im a freshman in college, and they provide free busses. I installed my high output alt a little over a month ago. Sometimes (seemingly randomly) when starting the car, the alternator won't turn on for like a minute. I can rev up to 2k, no dice. I can apply a load (heat/ac, radio, deforester), and same thing.. doesn't turn on. Alright.. So I know that this will be the first question, so Im gonna get it out of the way. I never really bumped the system on the stocker, as my alt is like 17 yrs old. I didn't wanna kill it and be stranded.. I tried to be responsible As a result, i never really monitored voltage. Idk whether or not this issue happened with the stock alt. Now.. Would this most likely be an alternator problem, or a wiring issue? My understanding is that if the alternator has a problem, it just doesn't work.. its dead. This leads me to think that the problem is wiring. DubNDodge
Same thing on my fathers trunk. '04 Dodge 2500 diesel. Turn it on and I watch the stock volt meter not go above battery resting voltage. Dome lights/ headlights will do some goofy shit like either dim lower or get brighter for a split second. Reving doesn't help. Takes about a minute or two for it to actually kick on. Just different body panels. Does he have any accusations at to why it happens? Of course us bassheads always looking at voltages/ watching lights dim etc. is how I noticed it. I mentioned it and sadly he seemed to not care. I do know that temperature is not relevant. Outside temp nor engine temp. Did it when it was 90 degrees out and when 18. Both when engine was hot and cold.
