SnowDrifter Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 Let me put it this way: I play until the magnets on my subs get hotcaps are added to relieve the alt while it charges the batteries... luckily in a car most all of this happens at the same time while its running and setup properly anyways Wait what? Caps don't really do anything in the way of relieving the alt. If anything they relieve the batteries a bit. My car is set up to play all day. To the point where I've wired up relays to my engine fans. Blows cool air directly over the alt. zayres29 Posted January 28, 2014 Author Report Posted January 28, 2014 technically they are relieving the whole system the amps are pulling from the caps not the bats the caps are charged from the bats and the bats are charged from the alt since the batts arent as drained as they would be if the amps were hooked right to them the alt doesnt have to do as much charging.... correct me if im wrong Btw that was the first person. Colin - STAPUFT Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 I've wanted some of the supercaps for a while, but the cheap online bandwagon has most certainly left the station. Something my mind keeps coming back to though- and I'm sure I am over thinking this.... since the caps can discharge and charge so easily, doesn't that make it easy for the alts to go buck wild crazy when charging the caps back?? Couldn't this be harmful to the alts? zayres29 Posted January 28, 2014 Author Report Posted January 28, 2014 i would think that the alt wouldnt be over worked at all... the alt is only going to charge at the voltage the regulator is set at regardless of what its charging since there is less internal resistance in a cap the time it takes to charge is just reduced until voltage is restored Btw that was the first person. alaskanzx5 Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 An amp pulls from the highest potential voltage right? So with a cap being the closest source with the highest voltage (will charge to what ever voltage the alt pots to it). once the cap is drained/below alt voltage it will pull from the alt. Once the power draw exceeds what the ally can handle it falls to battery voltage and pulls from the batteries. Between songs/pauses in power draw the alt will first charge the cap bank because of how quickly it charges. After that the batteries will charge. if the break in power draw doesn't last long then at least the caps should be charged. The amp will then pull from the cap again while the batteries charge more and the cycle should continue like that? in this scenario I see that the alt isn't exactly getting pushed less but it's suppling a steady power supply to the whole system. keeps the alt at the top of it's performance. As the alt gets hot the performance will drop but that's when you need to know the limits of the electrical and give it a break if you're falling down to battery voltage to often or if it's not coming back up from battery voltage.
