Swampy Posted March 27, 2014 Report Posted March 27, 2014 Alright, so i have been pretty up in the air about my build for the last few weeks. i planned on scraping everything and going with 12"s, but decided against it when i noticed a sub matching my current 18 came up for sale. After a lot of planning, i have finally figured out what my build will consist of. No pics yet, i will post plenty of them as i am in the process of the build. i am about 2 weeks out from starting. So without further hesitation, here we go: Vehicle: 1998 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0L V6, 5 - speed transmission i have already applied ~140 sq ft of NVX sound deadener to the vehicle. my wall design is coming from Ryan Miskin of RAM-Designs. all im waiting on is the actual plans to come in, but after discussing it with him the wall will start just behind the B-pillar in my explorer and the set up will consist of a sub behind each seat and the port running top to bottom between the subs, firing in between the seats. Double layered 3/4" MDF of course with a fiberglass layer on the inside of the box like zach_e89 did with his box. ill post an actual copy of the box plans in the thread as soon as they come in. (box is tuned to 32 Hz) the back seats will be removed and ill be putting a false floor in. once the floor is leveled out, ill be bolting it to the chassis of the explorer. not sure yet if ill use the floor as the bottom of the box, or if the design will call for something else. i just have to wait and see... my door panels have to be re-done for sure to accommodate 2 sets of speakers. The way my explorer is set up, the wall will completely cover the rear factory speaker mount locations, so i really dont have any other choice. i plan on redoing them with fiberglass once i have the skeleton of the mounting hole done in wood, and then sanding and repainting. (again, pics as i can get them.) Electrical: alternator - DC Power Inc 270A XP Alt Front batt - XS Power D6500 back batts - 2 (or 3 depending on my needs) shuriken SK-BT80 power wire - 2/0 Sky High Audio power wire, 2 positive runs from front batt to back batt (fused of course on both sides), and two separate ground points in the back of the vehicle with the same 2/0. Amplifiers: Sub amps - AQ 2200 @ 1 ohm. Ill have two of these, one for each 18". i currently have one that will be here tomorrow, and am still looking for one to match it. Mids/Highs - SKAR SK 85.4 Drivers: Subs - 2 18" DC Audio m1 Level 5s each with a 2 ohm DVC. They are rated at 2000W RMS each mids/highs - one set of 5x7" Alpine Type - R's that i use on HP filter only. (they are a little bright at higher volume levels, but im overall happy enough to not do away with them...yet anyways.) as far as my other set of speakers, im actually looking for suggestions. Id like to be able to hit my mid-bass that im missing out on from the current way i have the alpines set up. the size isnt too important because ill be redoing the door panels either way, so i can accommodate any size up to probably a 10" sub to still fit along with my 5x7s lol. if anyone has some suggestions, id be happy to entertain some ideas. I know this is kind of pointless with no pictures, but if youre as good with your imagination as i am...you can see it too already (unfortunately, as everyone knows, nothing in car audio is ever simple) im sure that i have forgotten something, but i think thats everything. As i said, im about 2-3 weeks out on starting, and once i start ill be updating the thread daily with pictures and all. i have no idea what to really expect out of this system, but im sure itll be loud. its a huge step for me since i will be doing the whole install solo, so im really intent on doing things right. hope you guys enjoy the build as much as i will, because ill be putting a lot of serious time into this. for anyone that wants to stick around, ill keep you posted. Swampy Posted March 29, 2014 Author Report Posted March 29, 2014 This is the current 6 cube sub box that is in my explorer currently. i posted this so you could get a nice shot of the total size of the explorer all the way through. this is the unboxing of my first AQ 2200 that got hooked up yesterday, and its works perfect. also, it makes me realize how good of a choice it was haha. Swampy Posted March 30, 2014 Author Report Posted March 30, 2014 im going to start looking into new door speakers...my budget is around ~$120 for a pair preferably. im looking for something that will bring out the mid-bass in my system, and something to level out my sound stage a little bit. after measuring, i have to keep my new speaker size to 8" or below, so i have some options. if anyone reading this has any ideas, please post up and let me hear them...because i know very little about mid-bass, so some help is absolutely necessary for me to not waste my money. Swampy Posted April 10, 2014 Author Report Posted April 10, 2014 i got my other sub in today and i am...nervous. after inspecting the subs a little bit, the look similar...but they arent an exact match. once you guys look at the pics of the two side by side, id appreciate some advice on what i can do to make them work together. My box design also came in yesterday. I don't claim to know how to solve anything, I just practice the basics. There is nothing worse than wasting hours over a problem that should have taken 5 mins.
