Alternator mounting bolt - Big 3 question?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I just got my wire for my big 3, I have my route planned for alternator + to battery +, and for battery - to chassis. I may be blind but I am having a hard time finding a good spot on the engine block for my engine to chassis wire.

What I would like to know is if I can use the alternator mounting bolt as my engine connection. Can I run the wire from my alternator mounting bolt to the chassis?

For my neg, I did block to chassis, and chassis to batt -

The bolt I used was my alternator bracket mounting bolt, because its an M12 (pretty beefy) and mounts to engine. As always, just sand first.

Good luck.. You got this shit :good:

Cool thanks man, I went ahead and did this and everything seems to be well. Except that now that I have done the big 3 my amp is cutting off if I play it loud, and it seems that my lights are dimming more. I backed off my gain a little bit to remedy this for now.

Could it be that I am getting worse dimming and amp cutting off because now that I have done the big 3, the amp is able to pull more power which is too much strain on my alternator and battery

to handle?

Yes!!!!!! Absolutely. In fact, that is how you should do it.

It can vary from vehicle to vehicle.

In a nutshell, you need to make sure everything has a direct path to the chassis. battery(ies), Engine, alternator case.

A lot of people say "well my alternator is grounded to the engine and therefore it's connected to the chassis" which is technically true, but since electricity follows the path of least resistance, a direct run from alternator case to chassis makes things more efficient.
