JP-12 Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 How do I know where to put fuses when I'm hooking up my system? I'm gonna be running two batteries and still need to do the big three but not sure if you need a fuse on that? I've never hooked up a system before but I've been looking a lot of stuff up and doin my research lately lol but any pointers or any good tutorials you know of would be greatly appreciated!
Bship Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 fuse as close as you can to each battery, within 12 inches or so. and it is a good idea to fuse between the alt and batt CARS 14 Sierra crew cab daily, Small build coming one of these days 69 C-10 fleetside in many pieces, won't be done till the end of time Last car '12 Focus with build log http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/165619-2012-focus-btl-15-crescendo-sundown-audio-control/
JP-12 Posted March 31, 2014 Author Report Posted March 31, 2014 When adding the second battery do you go (+) to (+) and ground the (-) in the back?
JP-12 Posted March 31, 2014 Author Report Posted March 31, 2014 Are you supposed to ground both the front and back battery or just the rear?
mmets Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 The front and ground batteries need to be grounded. It may be easier to ground the back batteries in the back and also save a little wiring. I did and have two runs from the front to the back for ground and also for power. fuse between the alt and battery is a toss up. I didn't. Reason being is that take the fuse out, the wire will get power still from the alt and the battery so didn't want to spend the extra money on two fuses since I have two runs from my alt to battery http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/177477-slowboring-07-trailblazer-build/Pioneer DEH-80PRSPRV 8MR400-NDY (eight) PRV TW350Ti (6)Sky High 1/0 OFC, 12 gauge and 8 gaugeTM Metalworkz battery terminals 120 sqft HushmatXS Power D3100 (6)Singer 350 Amp Alt Singer 320 (2)American Bass SQL3200 JL Audio JX360/4 Crossfire XS 8K (2) DC Audio XL 15s (6)
Bship Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 What I do on cars like ours is run a ground for the rear batt from the front batt. We don't have a traditional frame so I prefer to do it that way, you can also ground the rear batt to the floor, I just don't trust it. Make sure if you do to remove all the paint from where you attach the ground. Front battery already has a ground but you will upgrade it doing the big 3. rockFord_Expedition Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 Any wire that touches the positive post of a battery should be fused within 18" (of wire length not actual distance) or so from the battery. Many people do not fuse the charge lead between the alt and the battery, which is a whole different topic. So for example, if you have a rear battery, you will have a positive wire coming from the front battery or alternator connected to rear battery and then another wire coming from the rear bat to your amps. If the run goes from front battery to rear battery it should be fused twice, once near each battery. The wire coming off of the rear battery should go to either a fused distribution block or be fused It's self. Old School/New School RF Build March 2015 SOTM Winner How to crimp large wire
JP-12 Posted March 31, 2014 Author Report Posted March 31, 2014 Just a quick sketch but is this right for 1 run with 2 batteries? Including big 3. Edit: with a ground coming off the amp as well just forgot to draw it.
