Running without the regulator

I started my truck with command start this morning, and I wondered if the regulator in the secondary alternator was actually on. Obviously, using command start means the key isn't in the ON position, and I did check with a DMM...and sure enough the 12v ignition that I tapped into doesn't turn on with the command start but does as soon as I put the key in and turn it to the ON position.

Bad for the alternator to run without the regulator turned on? It didn't run for more than a few minuets, but should I switch to a different source?

Edit: The secondary just has the single 12v turn on wire.

Shouldn't matter but it's bad for reg to be on and alternator not turning I have triple alts an use to swap to one for a class in meca I was to to unplug the regulator or I could burn it up

So I'm guessing that without the regulator turned on, the alternator still will generate some kind of electricity but not enought to do any damage?
