csshakka Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 So looking to put a 2nd battery in the back of my vehicle, but ran into a bump. I'm fairly close to a state border where most of our shipments come from and I guess there's a bunch of laws prohibiting transporting batteries. This has greatly limited the batteries available to mainly standard SLA automotive batteries (generic brands from walmart/autozone/napa). The only decent AGM battery found in my local stores was the deka intimidator commercial series labelled "Starting & Cycling" (the first link). I noticed others online are labelled "Heavy Duty Deep Cycle" (the second link). What's the difference between these two types of batteries? Would "Starting & Cycling" deka intimidators be fine to use or should I wait until I make a trip during summer to find a deep cycle one? http://www.remybattery.com/Intimidator-9A31-Group-Size-31S-AGM-Battery-P4445.aspx http://www.remybattery.com/Intimidator-8AGC2-Group-Size-GC2-AGM-Battery-P4443.aspx EDIT: Also, what is the date cutoff for buying new batteries? 3 months? 6 months? a year? ..etc
dangaranga Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 The second battery is a 6 volt golf cart battery. baaudio Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 The DEKA Intimidator AGM batteries are both starting and deep cycle, that's one of the wonderful characteristics of an AGM. But to answer your question, a starting battery has multiple thinner plates to give you that initial burst of power, this also means they recharge quicker. A deep cycle battery has fewer thick plates so it can handle constant draw better. This makes it a good battery for us. csshakka Posted April 22, 2014 Author Report Posted April 22, 2014 Thanks for pointing it out, but the second link was mainly for example purposes to show the "heavy duty deep cycle" label haha. From all your responses, the deka agm commercial starting & cycling batteries are fine to use. I might go try to pick one up today or tomorrow if the price isn't terrible.
csshakka Posted April 22, 2014 Author Report Posted April 22, 2014 So after visiting my local Remy's, they only had three deka intimidator models and about 6 intimidator batteries total. Prices weren't very good even compared to their online site and a few of the batteries had a bit of rust on the terminals. Waiting until the summer and probably going to pick up a sears diehard platinum agm marine deep cycle for $180'ish w/ 3 year warranty.
baaudio Posted April 23, 2014 Report Posted April 23, 2014 You get what you pay for with batteries. There's a reason batteries like Northstar, XS, and Odyssey are so expensive.
